Hi all,

Goin down the M1 yesterday a loud whining noise started from rear. Stopped at next services, whilst slowing down, noise gets worse. Even worse when in neutral. When above 70mph, noise almost dissapears??.

Its not like a bearing, im pretty sure its coming from the diff area.
I had the diff oil changed at GF's few weeks ago, could it have leaked? If so, would this cause a loud whining at slow speeds?

Everything was closed today, but tomorrow im going to take it to a local mot place to check the diff oil, i have my doubts that it would have leaked out.....

This is the only car i have to use at the mo after i sold my cabrio, if its something serious im screwed:crazy:

Cheers

Jay

Hi Jay,
I had a diff renewed on a W202 (1997) It just started getting noisey...like a whining sound.
The stealer confirmed it was the diff and replaced it...quite an expensive job...because of all the other things they break whilst changing it (abs sensors...exhaust)

The other item that makes a similar noise is the u/v joint on the prop shaft.

I hope this has been of some help.
