Past few weeks a dry whirring noise has developed from under the floor. It starts as soon as the wheels are in motion. Whether under load or off load the noise does not get louder or quieter. It's not a drone or rumble as I would have thought would come from a wheel bearing. Could it be the propshaft bearing???
It's a 2005 ML270

Highly likely, does it change with engine speed?

Check to see if your parking brake cable is rubbing on the propshaft. Sometimes the retaining clip breaks and allows this to happen.

?Parking brake cable?

Speedometer is a digital signal I think.

It doesn't change with gear changes but increases in pitch as road speed increases so guess it's coming from somewhere after the gearbox

As mentioned in Post #3 above, check the parking brake cable rubbing on the propshaft.

had car up on ramp yesterday. Front propshaft has badly worn u/j which also looks rusty. I notice that they are replaceable so it's off to specialist on Monday get new u/j fitted. Will see if noise away but if not, that at least eliminates one problem I didn't know I had.
