Whirring noise from engine

Hi,

I have noticed that after I turn my ignition off there is a whirring noise coming from the engine (bit like a vacuum cleaner). This noise was ongoing for several minutes until I turned the engine to battery standby and then turned off again. I have a V reg mercedes c220 cdi.

Does anyone know what is causing this and is it anything to worry about?

Thanks.

I think it might be. I've never had this on any car's that I have had in the past. Is this common and should I worry?

It could just be normal cooling delay or the control relay is sticking. Try just leaving it a bit longer and see if it switches off of it's own accord.

Got this on my ML270 CDi, I think there is a small pump in the water circuit that circulates cooling water to the turbo on shutdown to remove any excess heat. I goes on for just a few seconds 30 at the most.

Cheers

Peter.
