Guys,

Does anyone know where I can get some "white light"/ xenon effect bulbs for the sidelights for a W211.

I currently have Bi-Xenons and just hate the orange/yellow light in the smaller lights.

Thanks in advance.

I have the Platinum white bulbs fitted but not 100% sure about the colour balance with the HID's. Still far better than the normal wedge bulbs though

I got some philips bluevision sidelight bulbs for free when I bought some silvervision indicators from www.powerbulbs.com

They're not blue when turned on, they're white. They don't look like anything special on their own but when compared to the yellow standard bulbs they look infinitely better!

You need the W5W wedge bulbs for the sidelights from PIAA, one of the first mods I did along with the main beam bulbs. They give a matching white light although you do get a slight blue reflection in the rear of the light unit when not in use.

Which colour W5W Jimmy? Theres quite a few to choose from. Also will these fit the sideys in a w208 clk

I found PIAA platinum white to be the best match. I tried Phillips Blue vision first which weren't 'white' enough, then PIAA Xtreme White which were too blue and looked wrong.

Never really noticed this. Does anyone actually drive on just sidelights?

What are the benefit of these 'white Lights' I might have to consider putting the proverbial hand in pocket???

just cosmetic really. The bulbs are a better match in terms of colour.

The HID headlights make the standard bulbs look a nasty yellow.

Thanks for your responses guys,

I have just emailed PIAA for a set of Platinum White bulbs - will post before and after pics for comparison.

Thanks & rgds

Thanks,
I'll have to get 'She that must be obeyed' to have a look.

Might be a way of distinguishing our car from the neighbour's twin vehicle.

Thanks

John,

The attached thread takes you to Brian's New E-Class. The tenth post down shows comparative pics of the sidelight

Now I don't know whether to charge Brian for advertising his car or brace myself for him sueing me for breach of copyright. :)

Peter

Nah!!!
He'll just move our post to some obscure thread :D

The first picture of Brians very nice car shows the light cluster and the sixth picture shows a close-up of the headlight and what I thought was an indicator! (I never learnt to count at school) Is that the case or am I way out of snych? Sorry to go slightly off topic-ish, but I certainly don't want orange blooming sidelights  Sides anythink else tis ill eagle (or sic parrot) down this ere part of the World???

John the confused

I do like those pictures

As Richard has said, the PIAA Platinum Whites are the best choice, they give a white light that matches the Xenons. I also fitted silver indicator bulbs so you dont get the fried egg look, they look silver but glow orange, a very intense orange, better than the standard indicator bulbs.

Hi Jimmy,
It all sounds very nice, if possible I'll pm you for the bits\part numbers.
Is it easy for a 'she-male' to fit?

Regards,
John

Hi John,

The bulbs are fairly easy to change. The sidelight bulbs are on a long tube that inserts into the back of the ligh unit. To make it easier you can disconnect the wiring plug, withdraw the tube after turning an 1/8th of a turn to unlock and the bulb simply slots in the end of the tube.

I have 4 pairs of the PIAA W5W to clear out at £5 per pair but these are the Xtreme Whites, part number H-222. They have quite a blue look to the glass but illuminate bright white, some say they are bluer than the Platinums but PIAA reckon they are whiter!!

What an excellent price, hopefully the E-class members on the forum will bite your hands off at that price.

pm on way

Kind regards
John

The Xtreme White headlight bulbs (H4/H7) do look whiter than Platinum white, but for some reason the wedge sidelight bulbs look too blue.

I'd also recommend changing the indicator bulbs as Jimmy mentioned. The fog light bulbs are worth changing too as they come on whenever you lock/unlock the car.

Ahh, Richard. how do you change the fog light bulbs?

I have a set of PIAA Ions for the fogs, they give a yellow light that gives better visibilty in fog, I have only had a quick look but cannot see how you get to change them?

Also, moving to the rear end. Are the rear indicator bulbs replaceable or are they LED's too? And I have a dead spider and cobweb in one of my rear reverse lights, how do you get to that? Looks like you have to remove all the trim inside, not easy. Just remembered, mines an estate so probably different.

Electricity and me have never really got on, but the bi-xeons lights are brilliant in every sense of the word. are you suggesting that there is room for improvement with the offerings you suggest? Or is it just a personal preference of how the illumination looks?
