My local (Northampton) dealer knows nothing about my car.. having never seen a CL65/S65/SL65 before.. they don't even have that model in their database..

Is there anyone at Merc headquarters that can answer questions for me regarding my car ? Does anyone have contacts ?

check out www.mercedes-amg.com

there should be number there to contact them for info. There aren't too many 65 owners about, and they should be more than delighted to help you.

Not knowing what questions you have, it's hard to answer. If they're around specifications, you can get these from Parkers Guide. If they're questions around a strange noise, etc, any main dealer should be able to help as very few issues would be AMG-specific.

There is an independent specalist in Northampton that I only just used for a new crank pulley on my CLK 55...

It is understandable that they might not know the answer to your query, but what is NOT acceptable is they will not find out. It has already been asked, but I am also now curious as to what problems you have.

John

I am amazed that they can be so thick. I know that the S/SL/CL65 AMG models didn't feature in the price lists as they were (in theory) cars you had to "request" but they must know they exist.

What info are you after?

Thanks guys for taking the time to reply to my vague thread.

Questions I had were as follows:

1. Some S65/CL65/SL65s came with the AMG/BiTurbo labelled dash, whereas mine is just a standard CL/S dash which only goes to 160mph. Why is this..

2. Following on from point 1. I would like to have the car's speed derestricted (by AMG) do they still offer this service ?

3. Following on again, I gather derestricting takes the car's new top speed to a restricted 186mph.. but my dash only goes to 160mph.. what do I do ?

4. From cold, the exhaust has a lovely throaty roar.. but once warmed up, it's very quiet. Is this due to valve/plenums or whatever opening closing.. if so, can they be kept open ?

Thanks in advance guys !

I mentioned point number 1 before....

A friend of mine had a CL65 and his dash only went to 160 ......

Not sure why ....

Have you just bought it ? if so did you buy it from round here (London) as my pal has just got rid of his and replaced it with a Gallardo ....

Only 36 CL65's in the UK you know .... ;)

I have just bought it yes, though it was from a main dealer in Leeds.

All of your questions are sensible and any self respecting dealership should simply apologise, and say that have no idea, but they will get an answer. It might take weeks, but there is no excuse.

I would be VERY disappointed if 'my' AMG did not have an AMG style dash, but there is no doubt a reason!!!

Has anyone noticed if Maff's beast has the logo's. I just tried to look at his pictures but my computer shows a X instead of pictures????

Regards,
John

Yep, his site is down (and now looks like it's fallen to some random hosting type company (not his))

I've PM/mailed him and got no reply.

Hopefully everything is okay? He is one heck of a nice bloke who will have the knowledge to answer most, if not all your questions???

OK, I have some info.

1. 65 AMGs did have bespoke instruments with "V12 bi-turbo AMG" on them. However, this only appeared on cars supplied with speedometers in km/h (they also read to 320km/h). Cars supplied with speedometers in mph were fitted with the speedo from the CL/S/SL600 which didn't have "V12 bi-turbo AMG" and only read to 160mph.

2. De-restriction wasn't officially offered but I am sure it could be done. I doubt that a franchised dealer will do it but there will be specialists who can. Alternatively you could take the car to AMG in Germany who could do the work.

3. If you do this and want to know your actual speed you will need a new speedo. Some 55 AMGs could be ordered with a 'Performance Pack' which included a higher limit of 186mph. I imagine that these have speedos reading up to at least 190mph which could be used as a replacement. However, I wouldn't be surprised if these had 'V8 kompressor AMG' written on them which might spoil the look.

4. Pass. I think you would have ask AMG directly for an answer to that one.

Thanks for the info.

What I find strange is that the S65 I test drove before buying the CL65 had an mph speedo which had the BiTurbo/AMG logos

D'oh!

I have to admit I was going by the memo sent to dealers advising them of the prices and specification ahead of the car being launched. In it there was a comment that the speedo would be different to the one in the photos and the SL/CL/S600 one would be used. Presumably at some point during the production run they must have changed their minds and started to fit one with the logos. Hence, some have them and some don't.

Maff's CL65 has a speedo that reads to 220mph and the bi-turbo V12 logo on it.

AMG will derestrict it for you as will DMS automotive. they can derestrict it without the ECU upgrade too. email them and ask what they can do.

I would however email AMG and see why your speedo is a bit on the low side!

I am here and am alive!!!
Sorry for the slow responses, work and other things been making me rather busy.

Yes, you need the proper '65 AMG speedo, pic below.
Regarding your questions:

1. Some S65/CL65/SL65s came with the AMG/BiTurbo labelled dash, whereas mine is just a standard CL/S dash which only goes to 160mph. Why is this..

Maybe an early model, the very very first ones had 'normal' speedo's as they weren't ready for the UK market

2. Following on from point 1. I would like to have the car's speed derestricted (by AMG) do they still offer this service ?

Yes, but goto DMS, cheaper and better, but (possible) loss of warentee.

3. Following on again, I gather derestricting takes the car's new top speed to a restricted 186mph.. but my dash only goes to 160mph.. what do I do ?

It will still go faster, speedo will just stop. You can still use the digital speedo.

4. From cold, the exhaust has a lovely throaty roar.. but once warmed up, it's very quiet. Is this due to valve/plenums or whatever opening closing.. if so, can they be kept open ?

Nope, its the way the turbo's work which muffle the sound when engine is warm. From cold it is a lovely sound, however once warmed there is not much you can do. Aftermarket exhausts will help, but it will never be as loud as the '55 range inside. Plus the CL65 has much more padding than the 55 series.

Get someone to drive your car and boot it whilst you stand outside, its still very loud from outside!

Hope this helps!

Matt.

Your other option is to buy a different instrument cluster. Both Kleeman and Brabus make speedos with 200mph on them, there may be an oem item that also has this range on it.

I'll assist in that dept if you like.
