Hi, my c270 is turning into a nightmare, a whooshing noise is cominfg from the turbo area, Mobilio mechanic came ,he was guessing that the turbo bearing is going because he could hear a metal noise.
He advised to take it to Merc dealers.I took the car to Bavarian Motors who are specialists inBMws and also do Mercs, the mechanic checked it and says its a pipe.Any ideas as the car has done 184000, my subaru was much better than this iam regretting buying it now.
Any ideas gentlemen on what it could be.Thanks

If it is a pipe at fault than that will be considerably cheaper than a new turbo if any consolation!

My first thought would be it's a loose pipe or some kind of boost leak but I haven't seen the car.

If the mechanic has seen it and thinks it's the pipe presumably it's not just worked loose, else he would've fixed it there and then.

Whereabouts are you?

Thanks for that Iam in Mirfield west Yorkshire. The mechanic says he has to remove a few things to get to the noise, he just heard the noise and said it was a pipe.

Based on what you've said, if you trust this mechanic let him take a closer look. A whoosh noise is more likely to be a leak (ie hose) than a bearing.

If the Mobilolife bloke said he could here something metallic sounding, then maybe there is a fault with the turbo itself, but I would eliminate the possibility of a boost leak first.

If successful you'll stand a better chance of identifying the source of the metallic sound.

I wouldn't trust the mobilo guy.

Sounds like he's attempting to fill the coffers of the local MB dealership.
Without investigating a highly likely hose leak any further, the chances are he's saying there's a metallic sound to justify a new turbo at an MB main dealer.

Take it to a trusted indie.

Hi all .Thanks for the advice i took it to 2 indies today , one of them said it was a pipe but needs to check further and strip it down, the other one also a specialist took it round the back and tested it he came back saying its the turbo bearings. They checked the turbo and theres play in the bearing.

The second one said its £1019 plus Vat from merc plus £160 fitting, he might be able to get a garret one cheaper because they make the turbos.
He said i can drive the car it might last a year only thing that will happen is loss of power and lose oil ,then it should be done.

When i came back i rang a Turbo place up and they said they can get turbo for £650 plus Vat plus 2 years warranty, the turbo is a garret one, old one cant be repaired.
They advised me not to drive the vehiclbecause it can go at anytime and then i will have big problems because the engine might seize due to loss of oil.
Iam not happy beccause i have already spent £500 on it so far.I would have been better in buying a lower mileage one for more money.
Iam going to get checked out properly next week because i think its a pipe,
the car was running fine until a couple of days ago.

Do more investigation.

I replaced a turbo on an Escort Diesel. I used a company in Yorkshire who supplied a recon one as an exchange swap out service.

Cost me approx £250 plus labour to remove and refit.

Im going back a while but i think the whole process cost £350.

Try googling recon exchange turbos.

Sorry to hear the bad news mate.

If worse comes to worse and a new turbo is required then why not go for a modified one that may possibly give you more boost if possible. ;)

The guy at the turbocentre told me that this turbo cannot be rebuilt or reconned because garret wont supply the parts ,only can buy new.Iam going to get the car properly checked out .It might be hose hopefully.I would get the car chipped but the mileage is too much.or i could part ex for a lesser mileage one.but i will loose a lot of money.I do not know what to do.

Has anybody dealt with midland turbo in Nottingham,I did a google like i was told.

There are a number of possible suppliers but stick to Authorised Garrett Supply and Repair centres. e.g

http://www.turboactive.com/

This lot are one of the master distributors for Garrett in the UK. They have a depot in Leeds.

http://www.btnturbo.com/

On the whole best to fit a new or remanufactured unit than trying to repair yourself.

if its a hose you would have had fault codes (low boost pressure )ect stored in the engine control unit and the turbo function normally shuts down until ignition is recycled .also noise would be a hissing sound

if turbo then different fault codes , and a sort of whistling noise /tinging noise ,

Check that the primary cat isnt blocked as this is a known problem, a blocked cat would cause a 'whooshing' sound.

Is the cat easy to remove or unbolt , if i unbolted it would the sound go away. The sound seems to be coming from the front near the intercooler but ii am no mechanic iam just guessing.
The car ran fine until a couple of days until my mechanic worked on it , the only thing he did was change the fule lines.
Ffter that this sound has come i even took it on the motorway to Lincoln and Bolton it ran fine.Iam thinking some pipe might have comeoff on the motorway. But i will look into the cat, Iam hoping its not the turbo.

After reading your post above, i'm more inclined to suspect a turbo pipe that is either split or just needs refitting after being disturbed by the recent work.

A blocked cat would be more of a gradual process over a period of time.

Hopefully this week i will get to the fault , has anbody ever used delaceys in Brighouse, what are they like. They charge £56 plus vat an hour ,i need to realyy get it checked out,I have had Merccare look at it ,within 10-15 mins he told me it was the turbo.
Can it be checked in that time,i wouldnt mind taking it to dealers they would diagnose it properly but they charge £110 thats a ripoff.
Anybody know of good indies in Yorkshire, How are Dronsfiled Mercedes?.
Also i have spoken to a couple of turbo places and they told me this turbo for the c270 cannot be reconditioned.

It is most likely to be Just a hose connection on the intercooler. A worn out turbo makes itself obvious with clouds of smoke...not unlike the clouds of smoke you are encountering from that bunch of thieves you have been taking your car too. Why not ask the mechanic who changed the fuel lines to rectify the problem HE caused? .Why not get a torch and have a close look yourself? :)

this is a classic example of why you need to know a grease monkey you can trust, if different places are giving different diagnosis surely this proves someone is talking sh..te, sounds like a leak to me, its easy for them to write the turbo off as thats where the most money is!! its quite possible the turbos gone with the miles its done but you need a mechanic you can trust then at least if it comes to worst you know youre paying for the right job and not some cowboys to guess and relace parts until they get lucky, you need someone to recomend somewhere local to you really. also someone who sais a knackered turbo might last a year is also talking crap, ive seen so many cars towed in off the motorway where the turbo has failed and sucked the engine oil out thus new engine...good luck
