Why do garages insist on 'test driving' my car?

Just picked up my twin turbo from its MOT.

    "Everything okay?" say me
"yes, but we had to take it out for a spin to get it hot enough to pass the emissions test" says bloke
    "ahh, alright says me"
"yeh, the lads enjoyed that" says bloke, grinning.

Considering i blasted it up the 'A' road in 3rd before taking it in, the cats should have been plenty hot enough.

This is a different garage than last time because when I queried the mileage travelled during the previous MOT the guy there muttered something about having to do the brake test on the road outside

Do you worry when you leave your car at garages?

Never had any of mine "test driven" during an MOT but then I always wait whilst it is done.

Test drives are not required as part of the MOT. If it failed the emissions test it could just have been 'reved up' on the ramp until the emissions drop.

Looks like they just fancy having a blast in your motor mate

I've heard it called an "Italian Tuneup".....rag it before presenting it for an emissions test so everything is nice and hot.....fine if it's you in your own vehicle but you would hope a garage would take care with customers cars.

I had a similar thing happen to me Adrian when my E55 went in to have the bumpers painted.
Someone I know spotted it 20 miles away one evening while it was supposed to be locked up in the bodyshop.

Needless to say they got the sharp end of my tongue the following morning and they won't be seeing any of my cars again....

As mentioned it's quite feasible to wait while they do an MOT - about 45 mins IIRC. But I wouldn't personally go there again.

most likely an excuse for a quick go but the brake test is a valid reason.. its used in case the normal brake tester isnt working for whatever reason.

When (in NI) we arrive for the MOT we (well not me, I drive a diesel) are advised to keep the engine running so that the emission test can be accurate, the first thing they do is the emission test.

Thereafter the only driving is through the test hall on to the brake test machine and the lift. MOTs are done while you wait...there is no other way.

Sounds like they just fancied having a blast in your car. Avoid them in future.

I've only ever heard of 4WD vehicles having to be brake tested on the road due to diff wind up if they use rolling road.

We test drive 99% of the cars that are in. This way we know if there are any potential issues.

You would expect a test drive for a service or similar :thumb: But not for an MOT

I'd make a note of the exact times they had the car between - when that speeding camera fine pops through your letterbox you'll be glad you did....

When my Volvo had broken down for the 2nd time in the first two weeks after a week at the dealers I was told it was fixed by a work colleague who saw it being thrashed mercilessly on a rural A road.
When I went to collect it later I mentioned this and there was a very embarrassed mechanic...

I just grinned...it was good to know it was ready for more punishment...:D
