...obviously we like its performance! But lets be honest, we'll never get to exploit its performance to anywhere near its full potential on the road, apart from an occasional traffic light grand prix (or on track, again I doubt most of us won't take our P&J on track and abuse it. I know I won't !!)

This lead me to think may be we are really no more than just a poser, so to speak ;)

We want other people to admire our AMGs, its exhausts note, and if mood takes you, show them a clean pair of exhausts pipes  :D

What are your excuses to buy your AMG?

Hope I am not opening a can of worms here, I am not targeting at AMG owners here, this question could also apply to other car marques...

I bought mine as I wanted power, looks, an upgrade and everything an AMG has to offer.

Theres only a few models I would buy if I had the choice, being the SL65, CL65 and the C63, simply because of the looks and power..

For me its about the look of the car (Aggressiveness) and how the car justifies and backs up how it looks, hence the reason I upgraded to an AMG.. It was the only way to get a better looking car along with more power and performance..

But the main reason is that I just love the 208 CLK and having the AMG model is perfect for me..

You say this but a load of us AMG owners are taking our P&Js on the track at Goodwood this weekend... trust me you don't even know half the potential of what you have bought in one of these cars until you get a chance at taking her on a track....then the whole AMG thing makes 100% sense.

This is what these cars were designed for and not to be wrapped up in a blanket for those traffic light moments. Well maybe that is me for most of the time with mine LOL, but after the last track day and also the AMG experience me and my mate had this year at MB World you understand your car much more plus know exactly where the limits are.

I'd like a C63 Estate, but I'd have it debadged.

I like the clean uncluttered look of a debaged car and lets be honest, you don't need badges when it's got four huge exhausts sticking out the back end.

Why would we buy them? The same reason people buy an IPhone - they don't really need it, they want it. Good marketing.

Why would anyone buy anything from the LVMH brand?

It says "I've got money and taste" or that's what the marketing specialist what you to think.

AMG was more exclusive before it's tie up with Mercedes in the early 90's - It was a bespoke tuner for people with very very deep pockets.

It's now become a mass market brand and AMG modifcations and parts are seen on every car in the lineup.

Much like BMW M Power - the M1 was something special, so was the first M3, then they realised how much they could earn marketing the brand. Good business.

Also having owned my CLK 230 for a year and a half and using it as a daily driver.. I couldn't help feel that something was missing or that I could do better..

The 208 AMG is fairly rare although I saw a few (2) whilst driving my 230 CLK over the period of owning it.. And when I looked at them and compared them to my car I considered buying the kit and wheels... Then realised that for a few more ££££ I could get the real deal..

So went and looked at one, test drove it, fell in love, got told it would be endless trouble and issues by everyone around me and then I put the deposit down and picked it up a week later :D

And here I am today and to be honest I expected large bills and issues, but I haven't had one.. :bannana:

I love my car and will never get rid of it..

Sorry I don't agree with this 100%....Sure there are some people that get these cars for the reasons you mention but the majority of the AMG owners I have met are family guys that couldn't get a Ferrari or Lambo due to the practicality of a Mercedes with that they can get the kids, wife and Tescos shopping in all at the same time, and the most important reason, because they are total petrol heads . I looked at an Aston Martin prior to getting my C63 and had to drop the idea due to my head started ruling my heart and quickly realised it was very unpractical....

People that could afford a new AMG now would have been able to afford one when they were more bespoke. Yes it is a major marketing brand but then again it is in the business of selling cars, just like it was back in the early 90's, but look what you get now with a bespoke, but especially for you with all the options you have chosen. I can tell now, I am huge petrol head and this car for the last 8 months puts a smile on my face every time I jump into it and turn that key....if thats what over marketing does to a person bring it on.:thumb:

It is a great brand with a great history that it is gathering pace with some very special cars, I look forward to seeing what they do next... roll on the new SLS convertible. :D

Hi Kinaero

the C63AMG is a superb piece of engineering with almost(it feels like) limitless power
Trackdays as stated by Benjy sees them at their best. The engine, and i quote a mercedes engineer is "bomb-proof" i drove mine very hard at Goodwood it didnt miss a beat and sounded beautiful, i achieved 139mph down the main straight and the car was so stable. Its massively powerful and as you say probably a little over the top for road use
but when you're old and deluded like me ..what the hell
and as for posing... why not:cool:< thats me in the raybans:thumb:

some people love them but if you want attention , no one can ignore them
hehe!

oh and you get 100k performance for 50k

People that could afford a new AMG now would have been able to afford one when they were more bespoke.

Full Bespoke V8 AMG Engined car back in the 80's was over £100K in the 80's - if you wanted a widebody SEC with a 6.0 DOHC it could be that much on top of the purchase price of the car (another £50K). Oh and that was pretty much paid for in full with a cheque at the end of the conversion Sir.

They cost more than any Bentley, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin or Ferrari, by quite a margin, it's why so few were ever built.

Mass production has never made these modern AMG cars more affordable. (Along with balloon payment finance of course).

Realistically, an Mclaren SLR is closer to the original bespoke AMG cars - it's that price bracket they were in.

Good man, as Mika said - 100k performance for 50k, yes please. I also think it is stealthy and more subtle Thame BMW M cars.

i can see this developing into another "C63 hater" thread
i think i'll sit back and have a beer...:D

I think Brabus are more bespoke to that end but yes I agree there are more options and ways now of people being able to buy one of these super cars and choice has opened up the market to a lot more people to be able to enjoy them and yes afford them. It was only a couple of months ago that the guy who built my engine was on the tele taking about the SLS engines he builds on National Geographic and that final badge he puts on top the engine when hes finished (Robert Fueller) which made me realise that AMG do still have that feel of hand built quality and bespokeness (If this is such a word LOL).

Just do yourself a favour..... Buy one!

Actually, I am thinking of having my C63 estate debadged, and put C180 badge on it, not going to fool anyone, but I have a sense of humour, lol :D

Thanks for the pic of a debadged car, do they also debadged the side as well??

AMG for amazing performance, superb comfort and refinement, talented handling and of course the 4 exhaust pipes.

Quality costs, but it's well worth it.
