Why doesn't Temp Guage work?

Why doesn't the tem guage on my S124 300TD work? Is it related to the thermostat or where else should I look?

On my 300ce-24 the temp gauge is fed from a sensor near the water pump. The single wire to this was quite tight and I finally broke it. Once re-soldered, all was fine.

This might be a clue for your non-working gauge.
