A friend at work got a new Skoda  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> RS Turbo (£15,000) 6 months ago.

How he enjoyed saying to me how his car worth more than mine  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/baaa.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':baa:'> and how it was more faster, flash and so on blah, blah, blah.

So, 6 months on and he's still feeling smug, until we visit a car price guide web site <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>  my car is valued as a trade in at £9800 ish. But, his is valued at £9000ish <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> .

To say he was gutted and I was smug was a understatement.

I did explain to him before he got his car that it would loose money like a brick in water but did he listen  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/baaa.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':baa:'> .

I told him that when you buy a ordinary car you SPEND your money <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('> , but when you buy a Mercedes you INVEST your money <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> .

He did'nt want to predict what his car will be worth in 5 yrs time <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> , although I did offer a few personal quotes <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/banana.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':bannana:'>  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/banana.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':bannana:'>  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/banana.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':bannana:'>

I followed one of those things round Goodwood race track and had a job keeping up with it, so did the Boxter behind me. Quite quick for a Skoda!

Someone accused me of being &quot;another Quentin Willson&quot; at work because I said something about his brand new Skoda. &nbsp;I tried to explain that for the money he spent he could have bought a 3 year old E430 Avantgarde etc! &nbsp; He said that the maintenance costs etc would be a LOT more for the merc so it's a waste of money, I pointed out that the depreciation on a brand new skoda was more than the depreciation and the maintenance of the merc added together. &nbsp; He wasn't convinced. &nbsp;I know who's right <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> .

Quentin Willson bought an SL500 and kept it for 9 months, it cost him £25,000. &nbsp; In 9 months he didn't need to have it serviced or change the tyres or anything. &nbsp; He then sold it for £25,000. &nbsp; It would have cost him more to own a nissan micra etc he said. &nbsp; He is a used car dealer and will therefore have the contacts and the know-how, but the idea is sound.

When I was looking for my replacement car for our Rover coupe I looked at an MG ZS180. We took one for a road test and were very impressed.
The I looked at what the SL I had always wanted would cost me.

The MG was £16,024 inc everything i wanted, and the SL'S were ranging from £15-18000.

I eventually spent a little over £17k on mine, after the wheels, aircon, service etc were all sorted - but I reckon its still worth not far short of that now.

However had I bought a new ZS - then it would now be worth somewhere around  £11-12k and getting ready for another big drop in value in may/june at the point where it is one year old - whereas the SL will be at the peak of its value again in the middle of the summer !!!!

It is the same engine as the Audi TT I believe.

Since he got the point's on his licence and as he has a baby due anytime now, I asked why worry about 0-60 times and top speeds as he thumps and bangs along Medways finest roads with his Skoda, surely he would of been better off getting a top spec' model or as stated earlier a nice 3-4 year old Merc <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> .

This argument seems somewhat lost on him though <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/baaa.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':baa:'> . He thought his car was made in Germany aswell until I mentioned that they are still made in Che**%$£?@, <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':silly:'>  <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':silly:'>  (I cant spell the country but you know where I mean)
