Will I be disappointed with an E Class 220 CDI?

I have an old W210 320 CDI estate and love it.

Looking to get an additional car (sold the Jeep today) and have seen a lovely 2007 220CDI E Class estate, perfect in all respects except I don't know about the engine.

After the 6 cylinder diesel, am I going to dislike the 220?

Its 200 miles away, so I dont want to go all that way and not like it.

Advice appreciated

Well, all the posts I've read by members saying the V6 oil burner is amazing compared to 4 pot so I'm guessing you will be disappointed with a 220 after having the V6.

I've got the E220 but I got it after having a B180d for over 3 years so to me it's lovely.

Maybe look for a E250 or even better 350 if you can find one within budget.

Good luck fella.

The thing is Ant, the current E220/E250 has a similar power output to the older generation E320. So you're not quite comparing like for like.

Our E220 CDI, very similar to yours but without the adblue, is putting out somewhere close to 200hp when it was put on the rolling road at Eurocharged.

For a daily driver that's all you ever need and it doesn't feel unrefined. It's unfair to compare this to a previous model though.

Honestly, my post wasn't putting him off a 220. We adore ours and as you said as a daily it's enough power for us.

I just remember reading about everyone's love of the 350 V6.

Been out for the day again in ours and it's just perfect for us.

Ant.

Yep I've owned them both and its the e350/6 pot every time, lot smoother less rattily lot more power.
Having said that I enjoyed my e220 for 3 years

I've owned both and while I'd trust the 4cyl diesel engine to get me anywhere, they are more than a little agricultural I'm afraid to say although Merced s have been getting better at shielding the noise from the cabin.

Truth is, if you can afford the V6 CDi you won't regret it whereas if you go for the 220 the chances are you will, judging by the sounds of your post.

Go with the V6.

It's not all in the power output, it's the power delivery, and the V6 will have far superior waftability.

And by all accounts, the smaller engines have to work harder so don't really get a great deal better fuel economy.

Get the 320, its a lovely engine and can easily be remapped to to around 270bhp giving similar performance to the new 350 version.

Recently bought W204 c220cdi and engine noise in cabin is taking some getting used to. Going in to MB next week to check what is causing the noise.

Phillip you really need to look at one and test drive it. Only you know what is right for you.

As a 2007 car, you're looking at an S211 not an S212.

While it's true that the 4-pot diesels are agricultural compared to the 6-pot engines, unless you're driving the S211 E220CDI very hard, I doubt it would disappoint you. The refinement of the 4-pot diesel in a W/S211 is much better than in a W/S204, so don't use that as a benchmark. If the car you're looking at is sensibly priced and ticks all the other boxes for you then it's worth a serious look.

As others have said, it would be best to drive one and make up your own mind, but at the end of the day if you bought it and found you weren't happy with it you could always run it for a few months and then move it on again.

Thanks for all the advice. I will test drive the 220 this weekend hopefully.

Both cars are exactly what I am looking for in every respect. The only difference is mileage. The 220 has 15k less miles than the 320 (and a 280) for the same money. Spec etc is the same and both the same colour!

Had test drives in E220 E 250 And lastly E350 cdi , the E350 stole it for me, the 220cdi did sound rather clattery inside the cabin . Now I wished I had gone for a E 400 petrol after being treated to a test drive in my neighbours E400 facelift Coupe :D

He will be disappointed, especially since he has the straight six, which is smoother even than the v6.

He also has 194 bhp rather than the 167bhp (or could be 147bhp) of the 4 pot 220cdi.

The OP is however talking about the previous gen 220 in the 211.

I'm surprised yours is putting out nearly 200bhp, since the current one listed by MB states only 177bhp for the 220.

Autocar thought your car had only 168bhp in 2013.

I've only driven them briefly as courtesy cars, but I had a 350CDi that I was sure on the paperwork said 250CDi.

It was a bit harsh but I thought it was OK for a 4cyl, especially the 250. Was gobsmacked when I popped the bonnet for a gander only to find it was the V6. I didn't like the car at all - couldn't even be bothered to take it for a run.

Then just recently I had an E220CDi - Night Edition? or something like that - and that seemed absolutely fine. I could have quite happily lived with that car.

I must say I found the exact opposite to your above comments, I found the 4 cyl E 220 lacking and sounded pretty van like , the E350 cdi 6 cyl on the other hand is a different drive altogether very linear with a very smooth acceleration
Especially in sport mode . :thumb:

Nah. The V6 is much smoother than the straight 6.
