Will retro fitting COMAND in w204 automatically allow BT?

Hi all,

I have accumulated parts for retrofit COMAND on w204. Looking to buy car in next few days. I'm in the UK. If I want to use bluetooth, do I have to buy a car that already has bluetooth, or will the BT work when I retrofit the COMAND head unit in any car without additional equipment?

I am looking at two cars tomorrow, one already has BT with audio 20, and one does not. Just want to know if I go for the one without, am I going to have to buy additional parts?

Extremely grateful for any assistance.

Ben.

The Comand NTG4 has bluetooth built into the headunit.

Buying a car without phone pre-wire will mean will also need to add a microphone and bluetooth antenna. Benefit of buying one with pre-wire is you will have comfort telephony so you can use a cradle if you wish e.g. the Mercedes SAP bluetooth cradle.

Note for a proper retrofit it involves more than just fitting the Comand unit and display, you need to change ducting, add cooling fans + other parts.

Edit: Just realised the post I linked to above was your previous thread!

All W204's, without exception, have Bluetooth as standard and have a mic built in to the dash assembly. Only Telephone Prewire (code 386) is an option.

Cheers,

Yes, I've looked at all the parts. Inchscape have nearly all parts available to buy. I'm going to do it all properly. I know some seem to want to cut corners and omit the cooling fan. Comand online said they were hoping to have all parts on website by middle of last week. Nothing yet.

Phil,

thanks for that. Looks like it doesn't matter what car I buy then. What is 'telephone pre-wiring' then if the bluetooth is already installed?

Thanks again,

Ben.

If you look at some early German price lists you can find W204 models that did not radio as standard feature, any radio. According to the current German price list, Audio 20 with a single CD drive is standard.

But you probably meant all UK W204 cars?

Correct, I did mean all UK-spec cars. It's impossible to buy a W204 without BT here unless it's a parallel import. Thanks for the reminder that other markets don't necessarily have the same standard kit :thumb:

What is 'telephone pre-wiring' then
In simple terms, Telephone Pre-wire (also known as Comfort Telephony) allows you to use a cradle to connect your phone to the car and thus use the factory-fitted external antenna which provides a better signal path and improved reception. Phone cradles are phone-model specific, with the exception of the Bluetooth SAP cradle which communicates with your handset via Bluetooth, but takes over the high power demand communication with the network cell.

Thankyou for that. All clear now. Hopefully I can get it all fitted and update the forum with my success next week.

We just received a big box of all the parts - I need to check that they all go together in the way expected and write some retrofit instructions and work out pricing.
