hi all,

first post on this forum so hello to eveyone :D

i'm looking to buy a set of alloys for my 2000 s320. have found a set off a 53 sl 5oo.
they are 5 spoke amg's with the following tyres:

front - 245/40/18
rear - 285/35/18

the seller doesnt have any more details about the wheels.

i think the rears will be a bit too wide but thought you guys might be able to clarify things before i take the plunge.

any help much appreciated.

I think the W140/W220 models take a different offset wheel to the rest of the models, including the R230 SL

Hi Ray,

Welcome to the forum !!!

Now - about these wheels..

The "correct" tyre size for non staggered 18" wheels is 245/45 18
all round and for a staggered setup ( wider at rear AMG setup) 245/45 18 at front with 275/40 18 tyres at rear.

The wheel offset for the W220 model is normally between 42-44 ET.

First you need to find out what the wheel offset is of the SL wheels, if this is below the above you will have to make sure that the tyres don't rub inside the arches at the rear of the car when driving.

As a comparison I have a 245/40 19 with 275/35 19 setup on my S320.

This works fine as the wheel offset is correct.

If in doubt ask the seller to put the wheels on your car and drive around for 10 -15 mins...

ps. make sure the alloys clear the calipers too - before driving with them spin them on the hub.

Tyres are wrong size - they are too small.. Tyres will cost you £550 (Falken) to £950 (Michelin) in the correct sizes (jasohal has it right)
Front 18x8.5ET30 will be dangerously close to the wheelarch - even Brabus don't go below ET35 in this width.
Rear 18x9.5ET33 is also right on the limit - Brabus go down to ET35.

We have all the 18/19" AMG and Mercedes wheel in stock for the S Class W220.
AMG I 18"
AMG III 18"
AMG III 19"
Difda (S500 5 spoke)
Segin (S600 forged)

You are welcome to call and I will send you photos.

another point....

The cruise control on these cars is very sensitive and you will prob find that having the wrong tyre size will mean your cruise will stop working / or only work till about 40 mph.

How do I know ?? I have been there....

IMHO best to get the correct fitment / tyre size and avoid expensive rectification later !!

thanks for the replys all ;)

i really dont want to risk any tyre contact or probs with the cruise.
what is the offset on your set up ja? might go with that.
also, what is the lowest offset i could get away with an not have any clearance problems.
have seen wheels advertised for an s class with 38 offset.
sometimes the car does have to carry a bit of weight.

will check out your site chris.

ET38 should be fine as long as the tyre width is not more than 275 at the back. ( you may require aftermarket wheel bolts and locking bolt kit for non MB wheels - if they don't make as many full turns as with the original wheels)

As far as the weight issue is concerned - you have two options to counter that - wither switch the suspension to sport mode or failing that you could raise it.

Do you know what the wheel width, offsets and actual tyre sizes are ?

think we need more info.. impossible to state minimum offset without knowing rim width
