is it totally illegal to tint front side windows ?

Some tinters will just refuse to tint the front windows. It's usually more hassle than it's worth regarding the law and regulations.

However, instead of applying a dark tint to my front side windows, I had a clear 'security film' fitted to my Audi's windows. Applying any transparency of film will obviously reduce light levels so this clear security film darkened the glass ever so slightly. It's already twin-pane laminated glass but it gave me a bit more piece of mind if somebody tried to smash the window in.

Might be worth looking at.

I had an unmarked police x5 in my yard yesterday with dark tint front windows!

Yes it is Andy . The legislation states 70% VLT ( visual light transmission ) , the fact that most ,if not all manufacturers glass is factory tinted close to this percentage ,means that any tinted film ( even the lights shade ) will make the glass VLT fall below U.k legislation .

Contradiction really because wearing your shades is actually viewing below 70%vlt but it's not seen in the same 'light' pardon the pun.

Do you get points or just a fine if pulled over for them?

If I remember correctly, what you`re allowed is not really worth having imho.
