When trying to activate my Windows 7 I get error 0xC004F063. I've read some details on the internet but am rather lost. A diagnostic tool gave the message below, if this means anything to anyone.

For background information. It's for a Dell laptop that had W7 preinstalled. I was unable to get the W7 instal partion to reinstall, so I downloaded an iso file of W7 and burnt this to disc. The activation code I have now seems not to work for this copy.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

I've just been through that rather painful experience.

The various people I spoke to seemed less than well informed. After 1 hour the final conclusion was I needed to contact Dell.

Problem is, that the serial number on the base of the laptop has faded due to the heat. I have the service tag number and express service code, but don't think that's enough.

I think if it were me I'd take it into a reputable local computer shop to get it sorted.
You could spend hours on the phone and still not sort it.

I'm sure you're correct, thought I also think I could buy a new product key for less than 1 hours labour at a computer store.

It's likely that if you install a 'dell' version Windows will not even bother trying to activate. Might be your better option

Or take it as a hint and upgrade to Windows 8....

Service tag number should be fine, they should be able to track the component build from that.

Might just do that. £80 as a business expense, isn't so bad.

That was an issue with XP but it's not supposed to matter with W7.

Or take it as a hint and upgrade to Windows 8....
I was thinking of suggesting that!

Or buy an educational version of W7. If the machine is licenced anyway then I don't see that as problem, although I realise not everyone will agree.

ETA: Not so sure about doing the above if its a work machine!

64 bit or 32 bit? Try a activation tool.

If I buy W8 can I buy the OEM version or must it be the Retail?

From what I've read the OEM needs to be bought with hardware, but places like Ebuyer only sell the OEM.

It appears that a lot of smaller retailers and system builders are in fact selling OEM versions, despite MS saying it's not yet available. These are the versions distributed to retail system builders, and technically not meant to then be sold on to the public. So, while MS has officially said an OEM version of the full OS is not yet available, it is technically despite those claims. Just upgrade....

W8 ordered. With the credit card out I've also ordered myself a SSD, £115 for 256GB - prices at last have come down to my kind of level :)

SSD and W8 now installed. Bootup takes seconds :)

W8 has me a bit lost in places but on the whole it seems quite a nice interface - much more smartphone-esque than before.

windows 8 is just plain nasty.

I predict it will be a flop, like vista.

I imagine from a business Systems Administrator point of view the change possibly looks comic book like. But from a home leisure user I can see smart phone users liking it.

I do miss the Start button though.

But who is going to buy a windows phone given the alternative options?

It would have to be really cheap and if they go that route... like Blackberry, they'll corner the childrens phone market and nothing else.

I think the whole touch screen slate thing that MS is aiming for is fine for a tablet but completely wasted on a PC. Forming a blend of the two imeans that neither is satisfactory.

Try windows phone before damning it. Completely stable and responsive.
Light years ahead of android in that department...
User friendly as well.
The new HTC 8x has a higher quality screen than the new iPhone 5 and the new Nokia 920 has the best camera of all smartphones.

Because they are low on market share there are some excellent deals to be had.

as tempted as i've been by the Galaxy Note 2, when it comes to emails and messaging I can't bring myself to give up my Blackberry keyboard, if you have limited use for apps then BB's are quite underrated in my opinion.

On the OP's problem front.... Did you wipe all partitions before trying to reinstall from the burnt Win 7 disk ?

If you're comfortable doing so I would suggest downloading any Linux distribution and using GParted to reset all partitions before doing so, there may be remnants of the original install.

If the problem ends up being the activation key, using the Microsoft automatic re-activation telephone line is less painful than you would imagine.

PM if you want more detailed instructions...........
