Hi

Few minor but annoying scratches have appeared on the wife's windscreen...quick look on the internet reveals various DIY products but not something you really want to make any worse and I suspect scratch removal/reduction is an art.

Anybody had experience of either trying to sort themselves and how did you get on?

Alternatively recommendations for a national service if there is one or local (Merseyside) if anybody has experience.

Cheers

You can buy glass polishing kits from places like Machine Mart. I used one on a football mark. It worked a treat, but was quite hard work to hold the buffer still.

Thanking you, will leave it to the Mrs to decide what she wants to do as in the end I suspect if I insist on one route it will be the wrong route!

I tried a kit a few years ago with very mixed results , we eventually changed the screen

I got a Scratch Repair kit from ebay. It did work but it took a few hours polishing for a seemingly light scratch.

If you've got fully comp insurance, go to autoglass who will most likely suggest they fit a new screen for £80 (ish) under your policy. Thats what they did to mine, which seems far better value than paying £150 to have the old one polished.

I had a deep scratch polished out of the SLR windscreen by a company specialising in office windows. I told him 'afterwards' how much a new one would've cost him had he screwed up.

Insurance/windscreen replacement route...do you happen to know if they replace with OEM or will I get a generic screen?

I'm guessing the latter otherwise everybody would be at it?!

Insurance nominated suppliers will be keen on fitting an aftermarket copy; the market is flooded with examples from China, Poland and South Africa to name a few; some are passable and some are horrendous. OEM is always best in terms of quality. You can insist on an OEM, MB branded windscreen but much will depend on your insurer, the policy or the age of your car.

With very few exceptions, any glass which does not show the MB emblem is not OEM, is not 'as good as' or even off the same production line.

I was with Adrian Flux and requested Autoglass as their first choice were some unknown indis. I know that autoglass has mixed reviews but they were a better bet. When I asked them what they would fit they said a aftermarket screen. I told them about the auto windscreen wipers and for safety reasons anted oem. They had no issues in getting a MB screen in, it just took a few more days. An oem screen was only £150 anyway.

Why would an SLR screen cost any more? Better quality glass?

Nope. Short supply and no pattern parts I guess. They can then charge what they like.

You had an SLR! Why did you get rid off :)!!

Leading on from scratches on the windscreen...when cleaning rear window am I right in thinking if I follow the lines of the heating elements using as little pressure as possible and as mild a cleaner as possible that's the best method?

Having moved up to an estate I have more heating elements in the side rears so just want to make sure I don't damage wherever possible.
