My windscreen wiper has suddenly become very slow during the middle of it's sweep. Does this mean the motor is on it's way out?

Maybe, or it could be your battery is getting flat.
Are your lights dim? does it take a little longer to start the car then normally?

Mine was getting slower & slower just before my battery went

When this happened to me on the W140, I pulled the cap off the bottom and put some grease on the extending shaft thing. Ran it a few times and its been OK since.

When this happened to my C180, I took it to the dealer who charged me 800 pounds for doing something or other.

Theres threads on here talking about it - its a common problem....

Battery went flat a couple weeks ago due to lack of use but has been tested and charged up again.

lift the cap and grease the 2 shafts within - that'll sort it - theres loads of threads about this

I just had the same problem on mine, started getting stuck when driving home on sunday, took one cap off and sprayed some spray grease (NOT WD40), ran it for a bit and seems ok, lets see how it goes!

worst-case either the mechanism is starting to seize or the motor is on the way out, mine struggled in the middle and then a couple of days later it died halfway up the screen! The motor is one of the cheapest bits to die.

I thought the motor was quite an expensive part or is that the mechanism?

The motor is about £150, the mechanism is more like double that! I advise everyone lubricate their mechanism as often as possible to avoid abrasion and ultimately damage! :)

squirting a shedload of grease under the upper flap on the arm seems to have done the trick. :D Can't get the lower larger cover off though, is it just a clip on cover?

Done the same as MickL, and had the same prob with the lower cover!

Always excellent advice in any context.

The problem is the alloy shaft which runs in the mechanisam it is seized, the motor is a 12v motor and rotates with no tight spots, battery would never cause this prob as the alternater voltage drives all auxillarys when running

bloody upper cover came off today when I was on the M6.

Does anyone have a part number for it?

ta
