My Windscreen is now pitted all over, sporting various shape and size chips. I also have two X shape cracks about the size of a 2p Coin (not in my direct view though).

Pretty soon I am going to need a new windscreen or may opt for one as I am worried that this one will crack from edge to edge some time soon.

Is my Windscreen different to a standard one, because of the rain sensor at the top?

Is there anything I need to know?

No offense if you are or know someone who is but in my personal experience so far the AutoGlass (or similar) people that come out, are not always the most knowledgable people!

If there is any complications I would rather know in advance, so I can try and guide if necessary (hopefully not telling the guy how to do his own job! )

Thanks

Graham, I can understand your concern. I was amazed this week to find that our MB dealer used one of these autoglass firms to fit a rear side window as part of a repair job on my alarm system. We only found out as they botched the job.....or that's what MB are saying

Graham,

I recently had my windscreen changed by RAC Auto Windscreen. They did a brilliant job in replacing the windscreen but the tint on it was much lighter than the original one which I discovered after driving for two days. Make sure they order one that matches the rest of your windows - they had to order another one from the MB dealer.
It shouldn't be any problem with rain or light sensor on the windscreen as these people change thousands of these screen and they know what they are doing and these screens are standard depending on your model. You may want to order the screen in advance and take it to one of their depots to have it replaced. It does take over an hour or so. I hope this helps.

Thats reminded me, I have to get mine replaced too. It is very scratched at the edge of where the wiper sweeps, previous owner must have let it wear down too much before replacing the blade.

Thats like saying that express tyre places know how to fit exhausts because they do loads of them too.

There is a diference between fitting them all the time and fitting them properly.

i had often wondered about the rain sensor before.

Imagine these new benzes going about such as the w203 . If somthing happens to the rear window , somone will cry.

Bonded into the rear window is ( i saw it at the factory , and these things are all glued in.

1 : the heating element
2 : the radio aerial
3 : the television tuner
4 : the GPS antenna
5 : the carphone antenna

i don't recon you would get much change out of £2000 for a new back window .

Just saying in general.

same story with the door mirrors on modern benzes. It's £500 for a non-optioned w210 door mirror, imagine how much it is with dimming glass, power folding, memory features, puddle lights etc. *shudder* prolly about a grand per side

I was told that the windscreen is part of the "vehicle structure" and that they should only be replaced with the original MB part, which has been tested in the event of an accident/roll over.

Why not have the screen repaired?

Have had some of these repairs done & have been very impressed by the results.

Billy,

Do you know if they can remove light scratching?

It only bothers me at night when the scratches diffuse the light from other cars and makes it look all starry like a special effect on a camera.

The scratching covers the whole arc of the wiper blade on the outsides of the screen.

Join the club , the panoramic wiper is famous for smearing and scratching

Jimmy,

Yes they can remove scratches, but it all depends how deep they are, they polish them out.

I think I was charged about £35.00 to repair two bullet holes.

Depending on how much the excess on your insurance policy , it might just be as cheap to get it replaced . IM sure glass does not affect your no claims policy.

alternatively, you can buy the repair kits and do it yourself.

Jimmy

As daft as it may seem - try polishing it out with toothpaste

Its saved a couple of screens for me - and if it doesnt work - its cost nothing except a bit of grief from the missus

Seriously - it can work!

I hope they realised prior to taking out the old screen ?

Dont worry Paul, the screen is pitted and cracked but does not NEED replacing and I have not done it yet.

I will make sure they are fully aware, when it comes to it!

The insurance first sent somebody round to attempt to repair two bullet chips and the scratching, he said the scratching was too bad and over too big an area to sensibly repair. The replacement wont cost me a thing, no excess and no effect on my NCB.

I have tried toothpaste in the past and it does work to an extent, wouldnt attempt a whole screen though.

i have been working withh merc glass for 20 years , maybe i can help if you give me a little more info, i can tell u what glass u need i.e model, year , and so on :)

i can answer that, all glass fitted to mb cars whether it be mb glass or after market glass , is subject to british standard safety tests ,so the glass that is aftermarket is built to the same specs as mb glass
