I have been looking around for ages for a winter car to replace my 530d which I bought when I was commuting big miles and now I don't need the economy I am bored with it. So for vfm I have been looking at W140, both cl and s and had pretty well settled on a cl when the right bargain came along.
However yesterday I spotted this Auto Trader UK - MERCEDES-BENZ S CLASS S500 4dr Auto Saloon

It looks like what I am after only four doors rather than two, any thoughts?

check that the seller doesn't mean 141k or 241k miles rather than 41k as advertised.

........more likely a zero missing.........

410000 MILES ........if its wrong........

Looking at the enlarged photos it doesnt strike me as only having covered 41K.......

'Mega spec' but no parking sensors?
If the mileage is right then it's a bargain. I wanted to buy a W140 years ago but gave up after looking at about a dozen cars that were all in much worse condition than described and most had dubious service history and probably had been clocked. Why would you buy a giant luxury mile muncher and only use it to pop to the shops?

What in a winter car are you looking for? Cheap motoring, reliability, comfort?

So comfort, reliability and space are a must as is a large boot and personally I always try and avoid the largest cost of motoring which is depreciation, hence the recently acquired 1999 SL and the quest for a good W140.
Oh, and I like to arrive in style.

So by 'winter car' you mean something with a roof rather than something particularly good in wet/icy/snowy conditions?

Was expecting to see a discussion on MLs etc!

Verify the mileage (MOTs, HPI, documentation), if it's correct then fantastic. Also check *everything* works, these are expensive cars to fix... mine cost me a bit to get the front suspension sorted (broken springs, bushes etc) but apart from that a troublefree 2+ years. Get the right one and you'll absolutely love it :)

Oh yeah, tyres are expensive so make sure they have plenty of tread and if you get any vibration under braking then factor in a new set of front disks.

Good luck!

I'm using the SL most days duiring the summer but will leave it in the garage for the winter so I need something else for the daily run around.
My son has a Navara and we have a Jeep in the business as a pool vehicle so I have access to proper "winter" vehicles.

No, two reasons, firstly its a money pit and secondly Jag cockpits are much too small for anyone over 6ft and 15stone plus other than those its certainly a beautiful car

True, I've often been suprised by how small the cockpit can be in Jags.

I know, its real pain in the ****, as its the only quality marque I didn't get during my time in plc land having a new company car every 18 months, but when you are doing 60K miles pa you just can't have a car that doesn't fit, its as gross as badly fitting shoes!

The 140 is a bargain these days , and that one looks very nice .

Just check everything works as they can be a bit prone to electrical gremlins and are very complex if anything goes wrong .

Good luck !
