hello again. dumb creature that i am, can anyone summarize how i should use the winter and sport settings on the auto box - sl320. been using 'w', but cannot say why!

michael. :confused:

The S/W switch doesn't stand for Sport/Winter it stands for Standard/Winter.

So 99% of the time it should be in S - Standard, you use the W-Winter setting in Icey/Slippy conditons where there is a chance of wheel spin.
When in the W-Winter setting the gearbox starts of in 2nd gear rather than 1st.

If you have been using the W setting mainly, Your mpg will be lower(i think) and your car will be less responsive from standing starts - feel more sluggish that if in the S-Standard setting.

So basically if its in the S-Standard, your car starts of in 1st gear, If its in W-Winter your car starts of in 2nd gear

Unfortunately I don't think you are being completely accurate in your answer, sorry.

I think the 'S' can also be called Sport on some Mercedes-Benz models E55AMG springs to mind. Also on the modern 211's it is called Standard and 'C' Comfort. It is still the same gearbox, but they describe the Comfort setting or your 'W' setting as being a more economical mode. (You pull away in second gear, and the box changes up earlier in the rev range)

For round town, stop start motoring the 'S' mode is obviously the better option, but for rural, or long distance driving I would say, each to there own. We have experimented and can confirm that the 'C' mode is more economical, but on the runs we used it was only about 2mpg difference.

A nice option and well worth using.

Regards,
John

I think he was 100% accurate! On the R129 SL he either has S/E which is sport or economy (older) or S/W which is standard or winter (newer). Nothing wrong with the answer at all!

Don't disagree. sorry Aletank.
(Quick bit of political manoeuvring) BUT in my post I said on some models and then mentioned ONE in particular. I realise this is NOT the model in question and now accept... 'A moment in haste may be regretted at leisure'

Hopefully I am correct with the rest of my post in describing the 'W'\'C' setting (no connection with WC) :)

E55AMG
'S' Sport
'C' Comfort
'M' Manual

Obviously it follows that when one model has this type of abbreviation it follows that others might, but NOT all.

Bye for now,
John

OK on mine (04 SLK320) the owners manual states s=standard, w=winter

On my E55 AMG:
S= stupidly fast
W= wickedly fast

Blimey.It's Lucky I couldn't make the GTG, I would never have kept up with you :crazy:

:) and 'M' = Mannnnn!!!!!

211 = S & C:

S = Standard
C = Comfort

S211 February 04 build page 170 of manual refers.

E55AMG 211 series page 173 of manual refers.

S = Sport For all normal driving conditions
C = Comfort For comfort mode
M = Manual For manual gear shifting

Sorry to get cranky,
BUT.. it appears that there 'might' be doubt over my previous post, so here is another 'C' and 'S'

The 2003 CL55 has the S/C and M setting.

The 2002 and prior CL's has a S and W setting.

As and if I get further results I will simply edit this post. I must reiterate however that the 'C' mode is carries out exactly the same function as the 'W' setting on other models.

John
The VERY LATEST SL also now has: S and C settings, C replacing the 03 model's 'W' .
