Winter Tyres are a must on a rear drive Merc

I have a set of 245/45 x 17 Winter Tyres Michelin Primacy Alpins used for 6 months last year on my W211 (E Class) it was better than a 4x4 infact my neighbour with one of those 4x4 volvo things was all over the place and smashed up the car. Only problem was I ended up doing all the pick ups of children for our road and taking people on shopping trips. It was no problem to drive in 6 inches of snow.

Dont forget winter tyres are for when the ambient temperature is below +7 Celcius so as soon as it gets to October you need them, the improved traction and breaking you get really improves safety and my fuel consumption actually improved at lower temperatures due to the improved road holding.

By contrast we have an SLK. I had to get this out of the garage one day, and was unable to reverse it back in. The tiny bit of snow on the drive resulted in the summer tyres being useless.

As I am changing the Car I have the set with a good 5/6mm and will be good for a about another 4 seasons. These cost me £800 last October  but worth every penny for the fun I had and the reduced stress :D If anyone one is interested in buying them do PM me as I need to sell them to make room for the new set of 205/55 x 16 Alpins I have just bought for my new C Class arriving in September ;)

Hi. Will these fit on a w221. Got 245/45/18 front and 275/45/18 back. cant find the rear size in winter spec, maybe not looking hard enough so prepared to change to 17" rims for the winter.

Not sure, is there an online manual (or even your in car manual) for the w221 this has all the rim sizes available for winters.

Does not look like 245/45 x 17 are standard for the S.

Can someone please give me a pointer where i can get these winter tyres. Not having any joy. Starting to think that it easier to drive on the summers in the snow than it is to source these tyres. Sure they dont have these problems in germany and they all got mercs bm's and porsche's with oversize wheels!!!

Try MyTyres.com or Camskills, other than that they are not generally available until October, no one seems to stock them in the UK over summer and last winters stock were mostly gone by December.

Tried both of them, neither got my size. So will have to wait intil october by which time they will tell me they have sold out!!

I'm in the same boat, my rears are well below the 4mm minimum for winter tyres and needed replaced last year, but had no choice but to keep running them.

its crazy, tyre companies dont care, e mailed 7 different suppliers and all I get is an electronic shoulder shrug.

I tell everyone to buy Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes, but when I e-mail them to find out when they will be available, they ignore my e-mail. So will now consider buying one of their competitors instead.

Smaller sizes than you guys are looking for, but I ordered some Michelin Alpin A4's in 175/65R15 for wifey's car from Costco last Friday and they rang yesterday to say they've got them in.

I looked at them recently but was put of by the poor snow performance in various tyre tests. As ever with Michelin, always the dearest never the best.

perhaps i should put 175's on the S and take off the 275's. Would be good in the snow but would look like a sofa with snow casters on!!!

Try TW Tyres in Rugby. They are excellent and used to supply the Mitsubishi Rally team which was local. They place big orders for winters including Vredestein
