Last winter caught me out. Wife and i both have rear wheel drive auto sledges and we live on a steep hill.

Contemplated buying a cheap 4x4, but having one "spare" just in case it snows seems a bit wasteful..

Just wondered if I need to buy new rims and snow tyres and keep them in the gge until October / November - then change wheels ?

Total newbie in this respect. Wheres cheapest/best place to purchase ?

Have found a few threads that mention buying steel rims for the winter tyres. Is this the way to go maybe ?

Depends what you want I'd hate to have steel wheels on mine it would just look sh1t. I bought some 17" alloys and winter tyres from here

Mercedes AMG BMW alloy wheels & tyres, UK wheel alloys

last winter. They look a lot better than steels IMO especially on a £40k car it's not a cheap way to go though £1700 but still cheaper than putting it in a ditch or sliding into the back of an arctic.:D

You could fit 16" Alloys with Dunlop winter tyres for about £1250 from the same source but that wasn't an option available when I got mine.
