on this site, however just want to clarify what the EXACT problem is.

I've an early '96 W202, the wiper arm moves very smoothly over the windscreen, no juddering etc but it only arcs over the windcreen not the "M" shaped motion it should be making, can you let me have your opinions on where i need to start, full regrease obviously, is it some part of the linkage loose, or new linkage, any advice welcome.

Looking forward to my first "getting the damned cover off" scenario,

Thanks

A full grease up would be the first thing to try. Search the thread for removing the plastic cover. It is fairly easy to slide this off once you have found the small gap under the cover and directly opposite the arm. If this description helps in any where:(

Greasing the arm should help the wiper to speed up, but as to why you are not getting the M shape, I'm not sure if greasing will cure the problem.

A full regrease seems to be the minimum in this situation, you can push the wiper arm in and out of the housing with little force, as if it has separated from something inside the housing.

I'll be trying the mirror and allen key trick, ;)

I know its well trodden ground.....

but I could do with a steer on the problem. I've had a look at the photos etc on here, Am i right in thinking that if it's not just a re-grease, which I don't think it is, then the whole mechanism has to come off to see if the linkage is faulty, I've just had new brakes alround including rear calipers so any help for DIY is most appreciated at this time.

Cheers

I think your problem is one of two things;either the large nut which locates the crank to the drivehead is loose , or the nylon gear inside the drivehead is slipping on it's shaft or has stripped.
This is how to remove the complete wiper assembly; http://members.lycos.nl/mbenz/windshield_wiper.htm.
Also removing the cover is not difficult ,here is how;http://202tech.mkosonen.com/howto/wiper.html.
Just ask if you need more information.
Cheers, Geo.

With all the good info on here got the wiper cover off no problem, took the wiper arm off and set the wiper motor going. Without the load of the wiper the movement was as you'd expect, put the wiper arm back on it can't take the load and the wiper arm just comes out and stays out.

The wiper moves strongly over the windscreen, is this the linkage that just needs replacing?

Thanks
