Hi. I am in need of a little information ,the window wiper on my car W124 260E is due for a service. I have read about how to do it.Yesterday i went out to the car to tackle this job. The posts i had seen, looked easy.Well , the first problem was this wiper had some sort of metal cover on, and no way would it come free.Did some have plastic type and others metal. Whats the right way to remove the metal type covers .Or is it a strip down and remove the unit from the car.Thank you for any help given . .

Yours is probably identical to the one in the link Dec posted however there are metal covered versions about that differ slightly in the details if not principle. The article mentions scribing alignment marks which obviously isn't gonna hurt anything but FWIW the few of these (slightly different versions) that i've rebuilt have all had several alignment notches cast into them

Hotrod do you know if its possible to drill a hole in the cover and fit grease nipple to it .Would i heve problems if i did this.Or drill and tap it for a niple ,remove it after and fit a gromet,or a plug .A lot of work involved just to grease it up.

I suspect the drill a hole and go nuts with some aerosol grease approach is relatively common but it's not one i'd do personally... typically when you take one of these apart that's been neglected you find the hardened/congealed remains of what used to be grease in them. Need to take 'em apart to clean them out properly before relubing IMO which is also the only way to remove swarf* that got inside when drilling a hole in the cover. The 'easy' to service wiper with the clip on turtleshell cover still needs removing from the car and dismantling to get at all the other bits which could benefit from some TLC as the youngest w124s are nearly 20 years old now

If the wiper is working well (you can feel it 'physically rock' the car when stationary) then i'd leave it alone personally. If it isn't then taking it apart properly will almost certainly make a bigger difference
From memory i don't think the turtleshell cover is thick enough to take a tapped thread for a grease nipple, a grommet is probably the neatest or plug the hole with some black silicon RTV

It's not as much work as it looks and as the pdf states while the wiper is out access to the scuttle area and drains is much better for removing all the dead leaves and mulch you'll likely find

* ETA there's two drain holes in the lower corners of the thing (visible in the pdf, pic 16). While there's pretty much zero chance of lubing it through these with the wiper in the car if you have compressed air then at least you could blow the thing out if you decide to drill a hole

Hotrodder i am thinking like you , to do the job right. I like to think its beter than the day it was made , thats after i have worked on it. But i was cutting corners. As every job i have done on this car,as ended up with another. After 25 years of use ,all plastic items just break off. I have had to repair this car in 7 months .Only job left to do is this wiper. Every job that i have done , was never that simple. So thats the way to go ,strip it out. Thank you all for the information given.
