Right seeking some advice. I am going to sit down calm down and read the advice in the morning.

I got myself a new laptop earlier and thought I would get a usb wireless adaptor for the desktop.

Basically I cannot get the computers to see each other.

No doubt it is something obvious I am missing but if someone can give me a few pointers it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Shaun

Make sure they are part of the same workgroup.

Both computers should then be visible in Network Neighbourhood, or My Network Places, depending on your operating system.

I am using XP pro on the Desktop and XP home on the Laptop.

On the desktop I am using a Belkin USB adaptor.
On right clicking to display the properties under the Authentication tab everything if greyed out. So there is no option to select The network access control using ieee 802.1x

If you have the My Computer icon on the desktop, right click on that, select properties.

Then go to the Computer Identification tab, click on the button in the lower half of the window marked "Change", then make sure the Workgroup details are the same.

Yeah they both say MSHOME

Do you have a router or are you trying to connect the two directly via wireless?

If its not via a router you will need to set your devices to comunicate in adhoc mode, both will need to be set to the same chanel, if its via a router you will need infrastructure mode.

I have got a router but it is not compatible with the AOL modem. BT Voyager as that just has the dsl in and USB out. the router requires the standard LAN cable fitting. The USB port was chucked in free so I am trying to share the files from the desktop to the laptop.

I made some progress with the ADHOC setting but there was no solid connection.

However it is progress in the right direction. I will look at it again tomorrow as I am now going to admit defeat for the night.

The Belkin router I used to have (it burnt out after 18 months) required a network LAN connection to set it up. I had to buy a LAN card and install it in the desktop to get started. My network then worked fine. I've continued to work with the desktop direct connected to the router and the laptops using wireless.

BTW my router was (and the new Linksys is) a combined modem/router so if yours is only a router it may not have the same requirement.

Right I have gone for a change in tactic.

I have swapped the belkin equipment for a a Netgear pack with built in ADSL modem. So in theory it should now be a simple job when I get home but we shall see.

Thanks all for the pointers so far.
