The chap said he can only order part from mercedes (Germany) and needs a copy of my log book and drivers license along with a covering letter that i am happy for the garage to order the part on my behalf??..

Sounds to me like CYA. 'We did tell you it was going to be bloody expensive, and you did authorise it, so there' :p

CYA = Cover you a***, or to put it another way, protect yourself from possible subsequent criticism or repercussions.

I can't think why MB would require a covering letter from you unless the cost is going to be very high, or unless I'm missing something? What's so special about the intelligent servo module?

This is normal as it is apparently part of the security system as I was told by my specialist. Mercedes won’t supply the part without proof to make sure it isn’t a stolen vehicle

This all new to me, has anyone come across this before re log book, drivers license and covering letter??? .... help and advise is much appreciated!

I came across exactly this when I ordered a spare key for a friend's E240 some years ago.

I've needed to produce registration doc and evidence of identity to order spare keys, but never any sort of letter.

In my case I wasn't the registered keeper on the V5C, possibly this is why they asked for the letter. Although I did have the keeper's ID (driving licence) to show. I also had the other key with me, and was just asking for another copy.

That makes sense.

Apropos ISM failure in general, it doesn't seem to be a common fault. I hope like hell it doesn't happen to me, because with the W164, so far as I can see there can be no suspended tow; it would need a recovery vehicle with either slippers/dollies for all four wheels, or a HIAB-type as used in big cities to remove clamped cars, or an indie with a STAR coming out to fix it after a new one is ordered and arrives from Germany. I wouldn't say I have nightmares, but it's a worrying possibility...

Thank you Grober and whitenemesis!!

So finally found the solution. Thanks for your input!
Whilst mechanics were quoting me >£1k to open the transmission or engine...the answer was very simple: a fuse issue.
Changed around the fuse in passenger compartment side and fixed the job. Gears lever happily communicates :)
I have exactly the same reading/issue on my B class

Now I need to go back and fix my original issue:

LEFT WINDOWBAG MALFUNCTION, CONSULT WORKSHOP.
Using diagnostic kit it shows:
DTC ERROR "B002113 - THE SQUIB FOR THE LEFT WINDOWBAG/HEADBAG HAS A MALFUNCTION. THERE IS A OPEN CIRCUIT"

It's a UK vehicle so left side = passenger side. Checked the fuse for sure this time again. Checked connectors under seat thoroughly also. Still will not reset with diagnostics. Bearing in mind this airbag warning has been there for months. Tried removing the battery terminal hoping to reset but no luck.

Any advice?
