Hi first let me thank ALL for this very informative site without whose help I could not still be driving my car.
I was having trouble starting my e 320 cdi and posted for help and the most likely culprit was the crank position sensor
purchased cps and set about replacing said item !
to say there is no room is an understatement having tried in vain to shift it without removing manifold i bit the bullet and removed the manifold (not as bad as i thought ) then the woes
The cps was solid, mole grips a full tin of wd 40 and 3 days later still would not budge then on the 4th day a slight movement twist pull and jiggle all I could but nothing, the inevitable happened it broke at the top shoulder oh cr*p what to do now. search site for answers could it be drilled out not really cant drill a magnate might go too far and drill actuating ring oh bother the only solution i could find was to remove gearbox and get it out from inside bell housing .
Me thinks this is turning into a nightmare having to take gearbox out for a piddling little sensor there must be another way.
I AM NOT ADVOCATING THIS AS A WAY TO DO THIS BUT IT WORKED FOR ME

This is the way I did it let me say this was s**t or bust scenario as i did not know what the outcome might be
i found a longish screwdriver with a thin blade and a blow lamp kept heating up the end of screwdriver and poking it into hole and burning through plastic round magnate, after about half hour of poking prodding and cursing it all came out a quick clean inside hole and fitted new cps.
Put all back together bled fuel system and hey presto fired first prod im a happy chappie once more
Again thank you to all for the help you give to those of us who know little and without your help we would be up the proverbial without a paddle.

210 or 211?

Well done! All I'd have done differently is used a poker. I can now recommend this technique (elsewhere) as one that works.

its easier to do the CPS from underneath and over the starter motor

yes had to take manifold off to get to cps it needed a good clean anyway

Wow... Thumbs up to you.

I have recently replaced my CPS on my W211, lucky it only took 30-45mins.

I thought W210's finished in 02? W211 certainly came out in 02.
Learnt something else new today:dk:

2002 is the cross over year for the saloons
2003 is the cross over year for the estates
