A friend of mine found this company. Silvercrest Woodwork & Design and was very impressed. He has a R129 and his gear lever console was scratched and he needed a couple of heater switches cut out. He was very impressed with the work they do.

They do most everything. Carbon fibre, Piano Black, and Classic Wood restoration. Check out there website, very impressive. They are in Iver, Bucks.

They are 500 meters away from me. Dutton Farm used to be a complete complex of classic car restorers and similar, but has somewhat fallen of late.

I thought it sounded familiar. That's handy Charles.

You should pop into my work one lunch time for a round of golf in Stoke Poges. (we have our own golf course)

I have a client who is a member there. A very pleasant place to spend the afternoon.

Alas golf is a sport that has never got on with me, but I have caddied for my uncle around Stoke Poges (not Stoke Park and I wasn't wearing a steel rimmed hat). Happy to pop in to say hello though.

Quite expensive IMHO. I enquired about changing my wood (zebrano) interior to piano black and they quoted 500 plus VAT. You have to have deep pockets.

Piano black is just black lacquer, which is about £5 for a rattle can. Do it yourself for under a tenner! or even get some replacement wood parts to practise on.

For more involved wood restoration or re-veneer work, the best work is often done by luthiers and musical instrument repair workshops.

At some point I'd like to get an old set of wood pieces for a W140 and have them re worked in flame maple. Much nicer than boring old burr walnut.

Pay cheap pay often !!

I agree, and for stuff like cutting new holes for switches and new vaneers etc a company like silvercrest would be ideal.

However, getting a skilled woodworker to paint something black? of course they're going to charge the same labour rate regardless of the nature of the work they're doing.

I wouldn't engage a main dealer to replace an indicator bulb and charge me an hours labour for the same reason.

CKClive is a member on here and says he can do alot cheaper than that price so when the time comes.

Probably a good idea. As millo has suggested already, it's simply very shiny black paint, so far cheaper to be done by a bodyshop.

Has anyone tried the DIY method ?
Keeping the wet finish dustfree could be an issue.
