What to expect? I put my car into a Specialist for a intermitant fault.

The car didn't play up on several test drives they carried out, I left the car with them for a week to see if they could fix it.

During discussions possible TC could be but unlikly just starting to fail causing my issues. Anyway i did some of my own research and symptoms suggested a Electric contact plate in the box could also be a reason for the issue.

Anyway whilst the car was with them i asked for the Contact plate, transmision filter and gasket tobe fitted as i was going to ask them to do the transmission fluid and filter anyway.

Well i picked the car up tonight and drove her really easy didnt exceed 58mph over the 20 miles drive home.

15 miles into the drive after coming off a roundabout i notice the box held onto a gear abit longer the was correct.

I thought dam the fluid change has killed it! anyway i stopped and restarted it and it seem to drive ok for a minute or two. then the same thing happened. I drove her easy and nearly got home 5 miles later i stopped at some lights, couldnt get a gear so put the lever into reverse and rolled back into a layby.

ON inspection the car was pumping ATF fluid out from underneath! i turned the car off imediatley and called for help.

Once help arrived we pushed the car in neutral no more than 1/4 of a mile to my unit not exceeding 8mph at any point where its now sitting i didnt run the engine at this point as it would have pump what if any was left in the box out.

The place i used is not open till monday. and is 20 miles away.

What should i expect? what is fair to both parties? i called the specialists moble number at 7.45pm and left a message quite politly explaning what had happened and asked for a call back asap, I took pictures tonight at the seen of the car and the puddle of oil at the road side.

My concern that the box is Now damaged due to being driven low on oil. Although i didn't hear any grinding or vibrations but how was i to know it was loosing fluid?

PS, please if anyone does know who i used dont mention them as i dont want to proportion blame or cause harm to anyones business, I know mistakes happen just want a fair outcome for both.:(

5 gears or 7 gears?

The 5 gears is pretty much indestructible, fix the leak and fill it up with fresh ATF and it should be fine.

Thanks for the reply markjay, its the 5 speed box. Really hope it's ok

Is there no warning message on the dash for low transmission oil? Maybe it is not low enough to trigger the alarm?

No warnings at all for the ATF. How many miles on the clock? I had to have mine rebuilt at around 220K miles.

Initially it would be fair to expect the garage to flush and refill the ATF although they may just top it up. They should also explain why it leaked and hold their hands up, assuming it was their fault which would seem very likely. Once refilled they should test drive to ensure it doesn't happen again. This should cure the problem however if it doesn't then they should accept some liability if they have caused further damage. I would let them do the first bit and go from there... As you said anyone can make a mistake so let's give them a chance to rectify it

Nightmare gav not good news. Did they change the pilot bush or something? Not sure if yours has tc drain plug but if it has that may be loose and source of leak when they drained tc. Or they took cooler pipe off to drain the remaining oil and maybe not connected properly. Hope it all gets sorted ASAP.

91k, Yes streethawk, they replaced the electrical plug and conductor plate, I can't put any fluid in at as it will just pore out of the bottom somewhere so am having to get the car recovered back to them. Monday

As the last bit of fluid came out a Check engine light came on, i didnt and couldnt of driven it any further as this was the point it lost drive :(

Must be coming from that bush surly. I know my old 5 speed was 3/4 of a litre down after I did fluid and stuck in gear and did all sorts of wonderful things till I topped her up when Home. Hope it's not hurt it. Good luck.

Thanks bud, I'm not going to touch it as I want the guy who did the job see its unmessed with. Can't believe how it was gushing out. Still got to get 20miles to them as I doubt they have a recovery truck.

I've break down cover so I suppose I will have to use that. will know more monday :(

Sounds like we've got the same car, mine's in at the moment for a transmission refurb because I have the same issues as you.

I had my indy quote for it and then a transmission specialist quotation which was much cheaper, and with an unlimited 12 month warranty! Both just wanted to just replace everything due to the high mileage, this is fine by me as I want to keep the car for a few more years.

I hope it all works out ok for you, I'm forking out a lot of cash so I'm hoping I've made the right choice!

Defo get the recovery, I wouldn't risk driving it anywhere. At the moment is repairable, you could go from £1.5k from a refurb to £3k+ for a complete new transmission in a few miles if it runs dry.

It's undrivable so I wouldn't even try. Just annoyed it's another issue I've got to sort because of there carelessness

What was your intermitant fault? If it was gear selection issues then I don't think you've got another fault. Low oil just made it worse?

It wasnt a gear selection fault, it was what felt like a small missfire at high rpm, I then noticed the rpm would fluctuate a little at slow speed.

The box certainly wasn't leaking prior to them working on it. I know my car very well an it was like new underneath as I clean under there.

Unless they've removed the box the only way in is through the sump. They might have removed some pipes to flush out the TC and had the sump off and not done something up right. I doubt anything catastrophic has occurred.

I would say it's reasonable to expect them to arrange recovery. They will almost certainly have a deal with a local recovery company

Good luck for tomorrow gav

Thanks Herishi, will keep this thread upto speed when i know more:(

If a car gets damaged due to a garage making a mistake, not saying that this is necessarily the case, surely they'd have insurance to cover anything expensive?

Anyhow, it all turns out alright - I know how worrying car issues can be.
