Hi all,

Is there any way to figure out what the specs of my speakers / amp are in my 2012 E350Cdi C207 Sport?

It doesn't seem to have DAB so considering a carplay mod, but curious what is installed. Only purchased today so still learning.

Will it be tucked in documents?

Thanks

Mine says harman kardon on the speakers, no idea of the outputs . Doubt the data card will either . Best bet is to look for stickers on the speakers .

Is that on the speakers themselves behind the grills or on the grills?

I have a feeling they are the bog standard speakers for this model / trim. Looking at options to upgrade them but everything seems to indicate it is not a simple job and requires command trickery / wiring.

Are there subs which people add to standard systems to widen the sound stage?

Hi
Harman Kardon is clearly written on the front tweeters, if you had it you would know it.
The Sub in the Harman system can be seen at the bottom of the centre arm rest, thats where it is in the Cabriolet.
I certainly wouldnt pay to upgrade to Harman Kardon, I would just look at upgrading the standard speakers and add some sound deadening around the speakers.
Give Command an email as they sell speaker upgrade kits

Maybe also try having your ears syringed , I don't hear anything exactly special with my hard on carmon audio system.

So mine doesn't have the Harmon Kardon system unfortunately, and £2460 to retrofit it is a no go.

I have had a nosey about on EPC and think I have found the schematics for my system, but cannot find much in way of the speaker wattages (RMS) or the AMP wattage. I think on the standard model the AMP is integrated into the head unit as on EPC it states ***Item no. not valid for this model des. where the amp would be in the rear.

So looking at my options can anyone chip in?

  1. Would it even be worth upgrading the 4 speakers given the AMP will be matched to the existing speakers and so not much improvement in volume
  2. I assume there is no way to grab a preout from the head unit which I could feed to a 3rd party AMP?
  3. Has anyone experience using the head unit output feed for the speakers and using that as an input for a 3d party AMP which then powers all the speakers?
  4. Anyone simply added a low profile subwoofer / AMP to compliment what it already has?
Not looking to tear the car apart tbh, and not looking for anything spectacular. Just be nice to have something a bit beefier.

Another consideration is that I now have Retrofit Carplay unit which feeds into the OEM AUX system using a 3.5mm jack. Not ideal but I guess I could split this and feed that into an AMP in the boot which takes over speaker duties.

Any musings much appreciated.

I've just been through this on mine. It's a 2015 E250 coupe. COMAND APS NTG5. Came on here looking for the amp location as I haven't found it yet....
I didn't have a sub etc and just upgraded all 4 mids and tweeters with vibe ones (just put them in today).
I've had an amp/sub in the car for a while which I put in the boot (hoping to move to the rear shelf, will be looking into it over this week.

I have a vibe amp for the speakers (to install) and a vibe amp for the sub which is already in.
so:
1. The standard non-upgraded setup will drive the bigger speakers but they won't run at full tilt. As with everything, how well they sound depends on how much you want to spend! I need to find the original amp (if it has one), take the input and run it into the vibe 4 channel amp (the amp can take rca AND speaker level). Need to make sure there isn't a standard amp first and take the input to that otherwise the new one will go bang.

2. I used a speaker to rca line level converter from the rear speakers to give an RCA out (not a cheap one, this one can adjust the output gain). Then put this into an amp. I was running a 1000w amp but I took that out and put in a vibe micro sub amp. The thing is about 4 times smaller and still 700w peak. It actually works really well!

3. as 1 and 2. speaker to rca works... Just don't know if my standard system has an amp. Everyone I have spoken to so far said it is amped but I cannot locate one.
If this is the case the feed will just go headunit speaker out > amp >speakers. The amp I have (Vibe optisound micro 4 channel) just has a t-adapter and it's a case of just plugging it in and hiding the amp behind the dash.

4. I've used these before. You cannot beat an amp & sub.

It's all doable. It took me about 1.5 hours per corner. This includes removing all the trim, speakers, drilling out the rivets, chopping down the speaker pod (grid the lip off the front so it's flat), mounting the 6.5" speakers into the pod, soldering in the connectors and putting it all back together.
The workshop manual will say you need to remove both the rear seat and rear backrest but you can 100% do it without taking off the rear backrest.

If your data card says something like Audio 20 or 50 then that is the standard unit. Amp is integral with no line out. Command is the higher spec gui again with integral amp. HK option is the upgrades audio side with an external amp. Line in is by most I believe. The guys at command are the experts. MN head units can be tricky to upgrade depending on which gui you have.

Thanks for the reply! If that's the case I don't have an external amp. Which is what I thought! I have ntg 5 with the aftermarket 10" android tablet (I put that in over a year ago). In this case I should be able to get away with the T adapter and just plugging it in.
I'll report back for OP once I've done this....
Cheers!

How have you found the Android screen? Thinking of putting one in to replace the ntg4 Audio 50 screen in my 2010 A207.

It's alright... Just a few niggles that won't ever be fixed. I did a mini review on YouTube.

I know this comment was a while ago, but would you mind confirming who you mean by “command” please ?
