Would you buy from dealer without warranty?

I think what the dealer should have said is, We can offer the "Vehicle" at "This **** reduced price" and offer a/some "Warranty" but cant accept the "Offer" which you have asked/made.

Rather than, "yeah" we we accept your "offer" but dont expect a warranty lol

I know you guys are probably getting fed up with me trying to find a Car lol, But its a expensive "interest" i have, Not a life a style choice, i don't smoke or go out drinking or have posh holidays lol so i really don't want to get it wrong.

I'm going to pass on said vehicle and thank everyone for there imput

Ps i'm under No illusion of the running costs btw, Just trying to avoid a expensive mistake.

I bought my current car from a main ( but not Mercedes ) dealer. I had been watching it as it was local and I was looking for a w221 at the time. The car hit it's 5th birthday and the price dropped by 25% so I went straight to the dealer who told me the price was reduced to clear but it came without the usual dealer extras like a warranty and they were due to put it to auction.

I did however agree a 30 day 'snagging' period where they would fix anything that was likely to have been faulty at the time of sale. As luck would have it a wheel sensor failed the day after I bought it and they fixed it without argument.

The "without warranty" in my case just meant they wouldn't pay for a third party warranty as part of the price I paid but they still had an obligation to be sure the car was fit for sale.

The car i just purchased, came without any warranty as such, the dealer said if anything other than wear and tear were to go wrong, to bring it back to him and he will sort it.

So far the car has been fine, so I am hoping I will never need to revisit him.
I know he has close links to Pro-Tech MB specialists in Reading, so I have no reason to think otherwise.

Under the recent Consumer Law act 2015, I believe I have 6 months of the law on my side if anything were to go pear shaped!

The car came with full MB service history - last done in June 16, no mot history of any advisories.

Besides, the warranty company he would use has a ridiculously low claims limit.

I will probably go with warrantywise, for peace of mind, as they have quoted me £48 monthly for up to £5000 single repair limit and I have had good experiences with them in the past.

I was also very happy with the price of the car too.

It is illegal for dealers to use terms such as "trade sale" to the buying public.

If you buy without warranty you will get some protection under the consumer rights act.

I once went along with my Dad to buy another car. He liked it and was all set to push the button when I butted in and strarted to negotiate the price. Quite aggressively. In the end we were offered a much, much better deal on the basis of it being a trade sale.

It worked very well, bearing in mind that it was an Allegro which was going to break down repeatedly anyway and I could fix anything on it with a box of rusty spanners.

Today, I'd not even contemplate that sort of deal. Especially on a Merc where the electronics are hidden behind the veil of proprietary software. As moonloops says, the "dealer" doesn't have legal cover to use the term "trade sale". But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a whole mountain of hassle to sort out when the gearbox went bang after 2 months.

Just to clarify this; the trader didn't offer the car straight away as being a "trade sale", it was his reaction to your offer? So you made an offer and he said he could sell at that price but it would have to be a trade sale?

If that's the case, I'd be fine with it, in fact it's how I always try and buy if I do buy a car off a trader.

A decent warranty on a 12yr old AMG won't come cheap. (Think £1k+) A £300 trader warranty probably is as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Yes sorry what I meant was I would rather put it towards a proper warranty as the trader ones are as you said. Funny how they all seem to be 'Gold' or 'Premium'

I don't think they can. A friend of mine was sold a lemon and didn't notice when seller went to photocopy the signed receipt, he had put on there 'sold as seen', which Trading Standards said he is not allowed to do.

They said he is obliged as a trader to put things right.

Local Council/Trading Standards said they would chase, not massively interested and it would have had to go to court.

If it was me, I would have gone all the way but my friend left it.

I would rather buy privately than a part time trader as they will have no interest if anything goes wrong.

Maybe have a word with Jay @Mercland and ask him if he can source one? I'm sure you could strike a deal

I purchased my wife a c class coupe from a home trader in april this year since px'd, he was very decent. Replaced the battery no cost then a month later the starter all oem parts and had the car valeted. Nothing about warranty on the receipt.

We were offered a warranty on my other halfs SL which we bought from a garage.

The niggles we had which were there when we bought it, the garage sorted for us.

I had a chat with a lawyer mate of mine and he said you get up 6 months in reality although the minimum is 3 months.

You'd only use the warranty beyond that time I would imagine.

I got the impression that the garage we bought from wanted to show you got a warranty so were quite happy telling us about it. More of a peace of mind thing than 'deny responsibility' but then they didn't state it didn't come with any cover directly from them either.

The only near argument I had with the garage we bought from was that they initially said speak to the warranty firm.

We did and they said there was a £100 diagnostic fee so I asked the garage if they would cover that and they didn't want to. In the end they footed the entire bill as I suspect they knew the issue was there when they sold it.

But yes as you say Markjay beyond 6 months you'd go directly to the warranty rather than garage. Makes sense

Also there is some peace of mind having some kind of cover. Certainly was for my other half going from a near new Focus to ten year old SL!
