We've bought the lads an Xbox for Christmas and got one of these to go with it:

Had expected it to have the re;evant batteries with it - but surprise surprise - no. But can I find what batteries it will take - can I heck - does anyone have a clue please as to what I can/can't use? If we get normal AA rechargables will they work or does it need to be the M$ Xbox Battery packs at £10 a pop!!

I use one of these, plenty of charge for playing and can plug it into the xbox and play while its charging. My Xbox is a fair way from where i play (i use a projector and screen) but will charge from the USB on my laptop!

Each handset requires two AA batteries.

Bearing in mind that such things do take time to charge suggest you lay in some normal AA alkaline batteries as well!

TBH if you hadn't bought this already I'd recommend Microsoft's own charging station and the 1800mAH NiMH packs - don't buy the eBay clones as they require spearate chargers and won't work with the station (+ the odd version from Hong Kong can have some seriously dodgy wiring!)

Yes you can use rechargeable AA's in them.
These are great:

Note that the battery compartments on the controllers are (deliberately?) a snug fit for real batteries rather than the packs and some rechargables will be an effort to fit/remove.

Thanks Mark - that's what I was hoping! If I'd realised it was such a faff we wouldn't have bought it either!

Do I have to worry about the power at all for the batteries - ie 1800, 2500, 3600 etc......

Only problem with batteries is that you can`t play while it`s charging! The charge and play kits allow that.

Power from the charger is the same for all the batteries the values are effectively how long the batteries can go between charges. bigbobs is right the advantage of charging stations is: one in use - one charging

If you've got the receipt you could try returning it as unsuitable - Argos are pretty good at taking stuff back that was simply bought by mistook (or try your luck with the long queues from Dec 26th - "No I don't have a receipt - it was a present")
