Xenon lights W220

My 2005 S320 has developed a strange headlight fault. When the switch is set to "auto" and the lights come on the headlights come on only for about a second then turn off? If I turn the switch to headlight setting the lights come and stay on. All the other lights work fine.
I don't think it's a bulb or wiring issue?
If anyone has any experience with a similar issue I would be grateful hear from you.
