This will be be speed limiter. On the cruise control stalk (usually on the left of the steering wheel), you can push it in to set the speed limiter and push it again to turn it off.

There should also be some kind of display on the centre cluster of the dash showing what speed you have (accidently?) set.

Not sure about the A Class but you can often set an overall maximum speed through the cluster menus too (typically for when you have winter tyres fitted). That's always good for a laugh :D

Yes, I now consider the LIM function a hazard in itself.

Some years ago, I set it at 52K in a heavy road works area (50K limit) on a Belgian ring road festooned with cameras, and used it for many miles. When I reached some traffic lights at the start of the standard 100K zone, I was at the front of a queue trying to overtake many lorries and could not understand why the car did not accelerate, lots of flashing and tailgating from behind, don't blame them really.
I have not used it since, nor will do so again.

The speed limiter (and cruise control) is usually controlled by the 'thin' stalk near the indicator stalk. Push it in - in the same motion as using a snooker cue - and that will turn the limiter off (if it's on).

If I recall, it should disengage if you push the accelerator to beyond the kick down point.

Trouble is that a driver who knows little of the speed limiter may also be the sort who never presses down past the pressure point.

That's presumably just the light being tested on startup.

Light on the stalk indicates it's active if it's illuminated.
