OK so last nights debate was centered around what was the best MB produced in the mid 2000's, so we considered the dates 2001 - 2005. So after several pints of Timothy Taylors Landlords Pale Ale we came up with the following shortlist

    • W211 E500
    • W220 S500
    • W209 CLK500
    • W220 S350
    • W219 CLS500
    • W215 CL500

OK so you can see the theme everyone considered the V8 to be best (with one exception), we didn't consider any of the AMG cars (thats a whole new discussion) and we didn't consider cars like the W210 which ran from the nineties into the noughties, with the exception of the CL

So what does the greater panel think and why and then I'll tell you which one we voted best of the era

I have an E500 estate, which has looks, space, comfort and performance, can fit seven people or a wardrobe in, and still beat most cars away from 50/60 mph upwards. None of the others can do all of these things!

I'd like to vote for the S500. I was lucky to drive my uncles W220 S500 when I was 18 (a decade ago), and I was blown away. Hence my obsession today with all things Benz. Perhaps I was highly impressionable at that age, in such a nice car, but it left its mark. :)

My feeling is that a discrete veil should be drawn over all Mercedes produced in the "Jerkin' Shrimp" era.

Some say the best "mercedes" to buy at that time might have been one of these.;)

Controversial, but a great point! Having owned 2 Lexus's myself, I have to say they are not to be forgotten. The build quality is superb. The more recent ones are pretty dull, as were some of the earlier ones, but the LS400/LS430 were pretty iconic. More so in the States.

I did consider (momentarily) a LS600HL before buying my S Class, but was put off by the battery replacement cost should it go wrong!

I don't think you would get much argument there but the LS did have its problems and when they did boy were they big ones.

Got to agree with the above as it brought something new to the market, but then I am biased ;)

    I would put a vote in for my old CLK320 - W208

Didn't rust, went well, was economical, looked amazing Lovely interior, every toy you could ever want.

Truly the best car I ever owned.

It must be the W215 of course, in all it's guises :thumb:
