Yet another E500 S212!

I was starting to look for an E class around 2018 and I'm sure I saw that bronze E500, although the one I saw was better described as light metallic brown. Do you think that's the same one?

My ‘list’ of S212 E500 that have been up for sale includes a ‘bronze’ one sold in early 2018 that could be the same one. When sold it had the reg GF10URY, which now doesn’t show up in the DVLA database.

If it’s not the same one, then your beige one is a new one for the list!
Bit of a mix up on the 'list'...
GF10 above was/is mine, on a private plate since early 2018 but is palladium silver and now at around 60k miles and still enjoying it!!

Noted, thanks! My list seems to have got a bit mixed up in early 2018 as 3 came up for sale all at once and 2 went to forum members.

Great to hear you’re still enjoying it, not like these ‘ere folk who buy a perfect E500 and then flog it again after a few months ;)

Yes, quite likely - though as above, I clearly mixed up a few notes on my list at that time...

(Cough) It's not that I didn't enjoy it..... Stupid lockdown just stole my reason for having it....

Looks mint - and nice spec - shame no sunroof. Is this the one believed to be from the Fisherman's Friend legacy? Nice Service history and low miles!
On the service history though - mine has never been out of the dealer network - failed MOT a couple of months ago due to corroded rear brake pipes - MB quote - £2.7k! Called a specialist round the corner - they literally knocked a zero off at £270. When I went back to main dealer - they all of a sudden offered to do it for £1.5k - I had asked if age related discounts had been applied to which they assured me they had - but it was these that got them to the £1.2k reduction. Shame on them..... '13 plate E220 CDI in at the same time as me - they were telling him the same thing and the same price journey - funnily enough also saw him at the specialist - but his didn't need doing so it could easily be a case for trading standards. I am no mechanic but my understanding would be a wire brush and oil when the car is serviced should help prevent these things?....The specialist also flagged to me the gearbox should be serviced every 5 years - and had not been done for 8. Given it had never been out the network - says main dealers are not on their game for actually maintaining cars with them - wondering what else they have just sat on their hands with and not done hoping for a large future invoice opportunity. I will let them undertake the next 2 services which I have pre-paid (at a different main dealer) and from thereafter am thinking specialist now on. Shame on you MB main dealer network...

Well, don't look at me....

Yes, that's the same one, registered in Blackpool with an excellent MB service history Although someone seems to have swopped the wheels to AMG's from last time we saw it.

Nice specification car. The challenge is always going to be that colour, which is a bit.... Marmite.

From memory, it sold within a week when the Lofthouse family sold it.

Well it looks better for the alloys, though the interior trim seems to have completely bleached thanks to UV rays, so at least it appears even.

This vehicle must be considered either an investment or just unloved. Hasn't it been sold twice already since the initial offering when it was hanging around for a while?

That car is absolutely crying out for a contrasting brown dash and interior. The seats are fine, but I think the black looks foul with that exterior colour, and the wood doesn't help; it's close, but not close enough.

A chap has popped up on PH that bought the FF brown model above. Perhaps he'll post on here today, having pointed him this way.

Yes, that will be me, thanks for pointing me this way. I'll do a long and boring intro post by way of a hello.

I've been looking on and off at S212 E500s for some time (an E60 550i was also a consideration but I really fancied the Mercedes, having had plenty of BMWs already) and I actually saw this car for sale last time around. Back then I was in the middle of a Volvo V60 lease and I by the time I'd decided I would buy myself out of the lease, the car had sold.

I then decided to just wait the remaining time out of the lease, but with 12 months left to go I was fairly bored of the car so I did buy out of it early.

So I've just spent 2 months looking for the right car, struggling to find anything. Then this E500 appeared again and I got straight on the phone to the dealer. And now it's mine. Hurrah!

Apologies to those who bobbed off during that, I did say it would be boring...

Great purchase. Unique car with unique provenance. Doreen will look after you.

A 550i would have been a risky choice: that N63 engine has been a total nightmare in the US, where it consistently came bottom of the class for luxury car reliability reliability.

Have fun !

Great purchase indeed - enjoy!

Hello shifter. It is noticeable that the lacquer for the decorative wood panelling in the front has faded due to UV exposure, so you intend to address this or keep it as is?

Thanks all, I'm very pleased with it.

Ref the faded wood, yes you can tell but I really like the colour it has faded to, strangely. What I do with it might depend on what I do with the siding cubby hole cover which I've somehow managed to break already. Brilliant.

I'll post pics when I get chance of the interior.

It was a production fault on the "wood" trim on W212 / S212 in 2010 that they rectified in subsequent years.

Theoretically it's probably possible to get it refinished by a trim specialist, but that begs all kinds of questions as to how it will all match subsequently.

Another path is to replace the trim with parts from a scrapped car. Such trim sells for roughly £250 on Ebay, plus maybe another £200 to get it fitted by someone who knows what they're doing.

I concluded that it wasn't worth the faff as it really didn't seem necessary, but each to their own. The guy who bought my E500 from me didn't care about the problem.

Yes, I read about the faded trim some time ago. It didn't bother me, I knew I'd the issue and had seen pictures of it before buying.

If I can refit the wooden trim back onto the sliding part underneath, then I'd be happy to leave it as-is. It's the large rectangular part that covers the cubby holder/cup holder, and slides back to reveal the ash tray. I'm not sure, but I may also be missing a smaller rectangular part that sits ahead of the larger piece (sits directly underneath the ventilation controls) but I can't quite work out what's going on with it at the moment and haven't really had time to properly look.

If I'm missing a piece altogether then I'll have to do something with it.

You should be able to reconnect the wooden trim on the ash tray but I would advise you to remove the ash tray. The process is quite straight forward as it is only 2 bolts underneah the ashtray protectiot mat. Once those are out, pull VERY gently to make some room to remove the cigarrete lighter connector. Afterwards you should be able to get the ash tray out and reattach the wood trim piece ( therre are clips underneath the slidding panel)

Advise: put some microfiver cloths on the surronding area to prevent any scratches to the other bits of the trim
