Yet another happy customer for PCS!

Yes, I believe they have a Plastic Pipe that is attached to the Drain Hole that has to be pushed out of the way to allow draining.
Of course you have to remove the Sump Pan to put it back into place so as to get the correct level when refilling. (Although you would have to remove the Sump Pan anyway to change the Filter ;) )

No idea why it changed, the procedure for the 5 speed seemed quite simple! :)

Ahh my apologies David, I thought MangoMan would be quoting the cost for a 722.6 as his car has the 5 speed box. Now I get it :)

Glad you were happy with the job done, and £200 with parts and labour certainly is a good price for your car. A lot of people overlook the ATF and have problems later, prevention is better than cure. :)

From the records I have it had a change at around 50,000 miles and it is now on 116,000.

I think that a lot of people do not understand or care (and why should they?) how an automatic gearbox works so a fluid change does not appear on the radar sometimes as an engine oil change / service would.

It does not help that MB and other manufacturers messed about with "sealed for life" quotes followed by changing the recommended service intervals,

Who’s quoting you that?

I paid £111.38 from Mercedes for 8L Gearbox Oil (7.5 litres to fill but spare half litre for any that spills out on filling) Gearbox Oil Filter, Sump Gasket, Sump Plug Sealing Ring & Red Tab for Filler Pipe.

Just for clarity: Is this for a 5 or 7 speed gearbox?

Five Speed.

Pretty bulletproof transmissions as the same ones are fitted to the CLK55 AMG! So a 320 ain't gonna do it much harm...lol.

Absolutely.

I had the 5 speed in my C320, it has a very high torque rating.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they kept it in the 55 long after they were putting the 7-speed in other Mercs...?

Don’t think they still made the 55s when the 7 speed box came out.

Well, put it this way, they carried on using the 5g in the E55K way up until 2006 whilst all others had the 7g because the 7g couldn't handle the torque of the E55K.

Thanks for the confirmation John.... I knew I had read it somewhere, but wasn't quite sure.

Found this:

"The Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic (also called 722.6) is an electronically shifted 5-speed overdrive automatic transmission with torque converter lockup (typically in gears 3,4,5) and 2-speed for reverse. It replaced the older 722.3 / 722.4 4-speed 4G-Tronic transmission and its 722.5 5-speed derivative.

It was replaced by the Mercedes Benz 7G-Tronic 722.9 transmission introduced in 2003. This turned out to be a very lengthy process stretching out over nearly a decade. Due to its high torque capacity (up to 1000 Nm) and lower cost, it was still retained for turbocharged V12 engines".
