Yet another OM642 fuel/diesel leak... can you identify this tiny hose?

Hi all,

I believe there is a slow diesel leak on the passenger side of the engine, from a small fuel hose that I've highlighted in the pictures below. It could be something else, even the injector seals but I'd like to know if anybody knows what this part is called/part number - I'm struggling to locate the part number.

I actually blew the hose with an air gun and it seems to indefinitely mist/weep some fuel, so I wonder if the clip has cut into the hose.

Has anyone here ever changed it and the clips, and if it's as easy as it looks? Tight fit, mind - I hope you don't have to remove loads of crap just to get the space to insert the hose...?

I've also had a worse diesel leak on this side of the engine before, so sometimes I wondered if it was old fuel from that, but there was a tiny but pretty fresh pool of clear fluid right under that hose, along with some dampness along that side of the engine, so I'm assuming/hoping it's some this this 'simple'.

I've cleaned it up and will check the area again tomorrow after using the car.

Cheers,

Ed

my fuel pipes did the same found a leak from both of them as there was fuel on top of the fuel filter. I just called my local mercedes dealer and gave them my reg number and asked if they had the two pipes and clips in stock. I then got the clip pliers from amazon for a couple of quid.

you can check here for part numbers also.

Hiya,

I’m not actually talking about the pipes to the filter - but it’s this one, perhaps a pic of the engine will be clearer. Could be wrong of course, but it looks a lot easier to replace than the injector seals/metal fuel lines etc…

Thanks for the EPC!

Cheers

Edit: oops sorry, I can see that you were just speaking generally about the fuel lines, not confusing my issue with the fuel filter lines :) Yes, I too bought some amazon clic-r pliers too when I changed the fuel filter.

It doesn't looks like a popular part so I'll have to drop into MB Cardiff and see if they have one of these - I generally try to avoid going into the Cardiff dealership/parts as I haven't had the best experiences there! :)

yep i popped into sinclair cardiff for my pipes. had quite a few things from them recently at really good prices, a lot of unclaimed parts left on the shelves.

OT but seeing as you're a Cardiff guy... do you just go round the back of the dealership straight into the parts back door, or do you go through the showroom? I absolutely hate going through the showroom but found the 'back entrance' last time :p

They've never given me any great prices unfortunately, perhaps they simply aren't into the cut of my jib, but it was the service dept who I think are outright liars etc etc.

parts back door now, service management are useless and have no regard for customers. Recently I went over the bridge to Avantgarde mercedes in clevedon for a star diagnostic. Absolutely spot on guys there, explained everything to me clearly with no nonsense. Sinclair Cardiff wouldn't even bother to do the scan for me.

I just use them for parts and thats it.

Cool!

I might give Avantgarde a call and ask them for some quotes for different work.

I cleaned the area yesterday and had a short drive today and can see a tiny pooling of a few drops again today. So I’ll have to head over to them tomorrow and see if they have the little hose.

Really, really hoping I don’t have to remove the intercooler pipe to get the hose and clic-r pliers off and on… I already changed the green pipe o-ring recently and really don’t want to do that again!

I have some time now free tomorrow so really hope MB have the part. Will post more on this riveting topic tomorrow after visiting MB 😂

Not in stock so will pick up tomorrow hopefully. Only £3.50 for the tiny hose, which is more than what it should be, but this is MB after all.

After a quick play with the clic-r pliers today, my conclusion on if this is going to be doable without removing the intercooler pipe is 'highly unlikely' :(

Thinking about it, I think I'm going to order some replacement fuel hose clamps as per @MrGreedy's suggestion in a previous thread.... that way, I might be able to get away without having to move the intercooler pipe!

So I managed to silicon seal wrap this little hose and put the job off until today... I drove to Liverpool and back in that time and there was no further leak, so it confirmed that the leak was coming from this little hose (and not something much more expensive...)!

I just swapped it and it was an utter Alan B'stard to do with the intercooler pipe in place - along with how tough it is to get the pipe on/off without dismantling more of the fuelling system, it was a real pain. Plus it’s in the middle of the engine so a real back/hamstring killer.... I'll feel it tomorrow.

I had to cut the old pipe off, I just hope I didn’t damage the new pipe getting it on as it’s a ridiculously tough squeeze and I really had to manhandle with needle nose pliers to get the new one on (plus a touch of silicone grease). What the pictures don't show is that the top pipe is lower than the one at the front of the engine... so that's fun.

The clic-r clamp at the bottom (front of engine) seems to clamp down much harder than the one nearer the back of the engine… really cuts into the rubber (yes they're the right size). Haven’t actually tried starting the car yet to confirm the issue is resolved… my hamstrings are too tired for today.

The irony in this is that the intercooler pipe is going to have to come off soon anyway as I discovered a crack in the mounting… fun times!

Here's to a wild Friday night!

I recently had to replace one of the hoses on the top of the fuel filter on the E280.
I cheated a bit and used two small-diameter jubilee clips which I had in the spares box.
Easy to fit - No special tool - Pefect result.
