Val d'Isere ski accident victim Thomas Lynch, 22, was trying to break 100kph speed mark on iPhone app? | Mail Online

If anyone has been to Val D, they will know the slope.

Im an experienced skier but that run makes me livid every time I go there.
Im fine down it but it definitely should not be classed as a Red as its notoriously icy and thin in the afternoons.. Very difficult to ski down for anyone other than the advanced.

Obviously this chap was trying to get a new top speed on his app... we have all done it, but that run is not the place to do it... its always filled with out of control skiers trying to get home.

I remember it as patchy, (actually, it might have been the run I buggered up my knee on) but I dont know why it makes you livid. If conditions are poor, slow down. Anyways, if people are using phone apps to record top speeds, they're to blame, not the run. If he lost control at speed, he was going too fast, and better he hit a cannon than an innocent kid.

Wonder if the snow cannon had a crash pad on it. They're all meant to, but you often see ones without

From the report...

"The man was skiing down the intermediate level Solaise red run with friends when he careered violently into the padded snow cannon"

Shonky reporting in my view. Note the "amid reports of skiers" quote in the first paragraph....reports by whom? the police or journalists?
Who says this skier even had an iphone?
Who says if this skier did have an iphone that he was using that app?
Also note
"French police said it was unclear how fast Mr Lynch was traveling..." --- that means exactly what it says --- they do NOT know.
Also note how the quote from the ski cannon guy is so generic, except when its used in this article which is trying to suggest this skier was speeding.
"‘This cannon is positioned near the end of the piste. From the top of the run you can get a lot of speed." --- well that quote could apply to pretty much 99 percent of ski slopes!
This type of journalism is what gives the media a bad name
