Lockdown was a month old yesterday!

I’d assumed we’d still need to drive from time to time to shop for essentials, but as it’s turned out, we haven’t needed to very much: online grocery shopping has continued to be possible here (after the initial week or two of madness ended) and local shops have been well stocked. So our mileage has been much less than expected, totals for the month:
Big car: 5 miles
City car: 2 miles

I daren't calculate the cost per mile...

What’s your tally so far?

Big Car: 17 miles so far for two trips to B&Q and shopping once per week.
Small Car: 24 ft

A grand total of 12.8 miles.

Admittedly not checked on the car but based on Google’s measurement of the distance to and from the supermarket that I’ve visited once a week (can’t find online availability anywhere) x 4.

Did 321 miles to Inverness and back yesterday in the W140 ( Work journey , visiting Perth , Dunblane , Pitlochry , Newtonmore , Kingussie , Aviemore , Carrbridge and Inverness Fire Stations , delivering essential IT equipment and surveying kit in the smaller stations along the way ) . Filled up in S Queensferry before travelling up , and again on return 41L of unleaded consumed for 321 miles on the trip counter ( cruise control engaged virtually all the way there and back ) - using 4.55L/gal as the converter , works out to approx 9 gallons used , which returns approx 36 mpg . I'm happy with that for an S320 petrol automatic !

Numerous other work related journeys , including a couple over to the west within the last week or so ; well down from my usual 500+ miles a week , but had only filled up once this month until yesterday , rather than the once at least every week .

Must take the car for an air con regas next week ; weather getting warmer now , so hope that's all it needs , and now getting round to less vital jobs than tyres and brakes etc . ( It will be done whilst out on another essential journey which takes me past a suitable place ) .

Sounds like a nice journey. Scotland is such a beautiful place.

3 miles to local tyre depot to have winter/summer tyre swap done.
No customers and loads of used tyres to ensure social distancing.

Did a bit of photography along the way too , besides updating stock shots of the stations , passed these places on the way .

I had a trip through to Edinburgh at the start of the month to have a nice new set of Contis put on the W140 as well :)

Very little mileage - we are saving a fortune on fuel.

The Vito has done 10 miles, taking a bale of hay to the horse once. We normally use a tank of fuel a week.
The C Class is being used for occasional trips to Sainsbury's and sometimes to check the horses. I put £60 of petrol in it a few days ago - previous fill up was March 20th. Again we normally get through a tank a week.
The SL has moved once - at my suggestion Mrs BTB took it to buy frozen dog food yesterday. I hoovered the garage carpet while it was out :D

Mrs BTB was given an electric bicycle by her parents last year and she's been using that for the daily check of the horses (10 mile round trip) unless she has to take food/fencing stakes/etc., in which case it's the C Class.

Do you have to feed frozen dogs :D :D :D

Boom Boom !

C250d: 38 miles (couple of shopping runs two weeks ago and a short maintenance run yesterday)
MX-5: 2 miles (2weeks ago, washed it, round the village to dry the brakes, then tucked away on a battery minder)
Golf: 2 miles (yesterday warm up on the drive for 15mins and the round the village to clean the brakes)

Silver car 31 miles in 1 journey
Grey car <100 miles in 7 journeys
Black car <20 miles in 2 journeys
Others not moved
Total ~150 miles

We would have done more than 3,500 in that period which I reckon would cost around £1250, instead it’s cost around £50. In real terms I have spent zero on fuel as they were all filled prior to lock down.

I am going to slightly hijack this post - it is mileage related - bear with me please. It is more about how much expensive fuel that I have NOT used and the bizarre way in which I came into possession of so much fuel BEFORE the price at the pumps went down.

All of this happened immediately before lock down.

  • My scrappy old van : It has sat doing very little for years , I decided to tax and MOT it , use it during the spring to clear stuff from various properties then either scrap it or try and get a few quid for it. Out of the blue a mate of mine asked me to use the van to collect a few old motorbikes to add to his collection. On our return he offered me cash for the fuel used or to 'fill er up', I declined the cash and now have a van with a full tank of diesel that has not moved for months, and will probably not move for many months more. The tank of diesel has probably doubled the value of the van !

  • C55 AMG . my mother asked to visit her sister and her terminally ill husband. We set a date , the day before the trip I filled the C55 up (just about get there and back on a tank) , my uncle took a 'turn' and the visit was postponed...and then lock down came. The C55 has done 35 miles since. - OK,that has burnt about one and a half gallons at least :p.

  • SWMBO old Zafira . I am constantly harping on at her that when ever I jump in the thing (not often) the bloody thing is always on empty, so for ONCE in her life just to shut me up she filled it up ......a few days before lock down ....done about 30 miles since.

  • Our little Toyota Yaris 'run around' ....full tank, I always fill it up because the tank is small and it lasts for months. It will probably still have this fuel in it for Christmas shopping (if we can even go shopping by then) as it runs on fumes. about 10 miles since.
It does not end there. During a tidy up I lifted my Jerry can which was covered in cobwebs in the corner of an outbuilding only to find it is almost full of petrol ! when I filled it up ? I don't remember, but that will do for the lawnmower....:wallbash:

As you were.

GLC 0 miles

Grey car AMG GT C Roadster - anything
Black car ML63 AMG (5.5 bi turbo) - family
Silver car ML63 AMG (6.2 N/A) - work

I try to use the grey car for everything I can at the moment, especially with the weather the way it is, made easier because we can’t go out as a family in the way that we usually would, so two seats is enough. I can also fit a week’s worth of groceries in the boot too.

I have tried to give the others a run to keep them moving and the battery topped up as I don’t think modern cars like standing. I try to avoid them standing still for more than 2 weeks for this reason, things tend to break when it’s used after standing!

We usually do around 1,000 miles a month in each of the black and silver cars, but this month we should have been on holiday in the Isle of Wight and we never stay still even on holiday, we’re always driving somewhere! We did 3,500 miles in the equivalent period last year.

They all tend to average around 17 MPG in the warmer weather, on anything other than a short journey. So we’ve saved a fair amount in fuel costs, especially because we’ve not been spending money on eating out, coffees, etc, which we also tend to do a lot of!

Now this should be an interesting thread....... ;) 🍿

with the many explanations to justify the journeys, so 'ere goes.

Mrs me is doing around 14 miles per day on her commute. Plus a little more for supermarket visits. That beside me using it for 22 miles to visit an mt property when my Vito popped a front spring.

So the Vito,
1 day into lockdown, about 360 miles to London return to fetch our little girlie home.
We couldn't being sure how feasible the public transport option was being as it sounded like there was a bit of a rush on for persons to head out of London. I considered that she taking the tube to Euston, to hopefully get a ticket to sit on a busy train for 2 hours+ to M/cr, then take the train an hour up to Buxton had contamination risks. And that ignores her need to carry a fair bit o' stuff. My driving solo down, to return as two was far less risky.

Then nowt for 2 weeks, but driving off the drive the Vito popped its spring. Waiting for parts I rebuilt that last eve and I've just test driven 3 miles. The steering is off a tad and pulling left, groan.
I want to drive 80 miles to Prestatyn next week to clear gutters on a block of flats before the rain returns.

Then there is Mrs Me's motor. A 2003 Gr Cherokee, when I drive it I clear it's throat and exercise the brakes, that caused all sorts of warning lights. ABS decided the n/s brakes were needed for most of the drive back, but all reset well enough when cold again.
The Jeep has really got to go, so I'm considering how to replace it.
