Hope the collective oracle can assist:

My mate has a 1.6 petrol Zafira, which has been causing trouble recently. It is the only one of the 3 types of 1.6 petrol engines that came with an EGR valve

[Im guessing your first reaction is the same as mine: EGR valve - Petrol errrrrrr what?????????]

Anyway - this useless addition to the engine has gone faulty and has cost £700 in recent weeks for diagnosis/'repair' (he told them the EGR was fecked :wallbash:) and visits to several garages has still not fixed the issue.

Is there any way to disable the ECU from communicating with this useless appendage??

Thanks

rob

PS - i told him to buy a merc beforehand but he didnt

Petrol cars also have ERG valves - see here

There probably is a way of knocking up a simple circuit into fooling the engine that the EGR is operating. Time for a google.

Iv owned an Astra 1.6 16v since new (2001) & up to now its on its 5th EGR valve, its easy to fit, & you can buy them a lot cheaper from ANDREW PAGE ltd, who'v got quite a few depots, listed on net. The other part that can give trouble on them is the coil pack, also available from A Page , & again easy to fit. You will need torx tools for both these jobs.

I happen to know that Vauxhall have tried blanking the EGR off, & told dealers to do the same,& then had to retract it.

How easy are they to change (piccies :)) - had a quick peek at website :thumb:
cheers

2 torx bolts, 1 electric plug, simple. It sits on a bracket to the right of the engine top

There's a good chance that the latest ECU software update from Vauxhall will cure this fault. On some 1600's the latest software effectively disables the EGR, and stops the ECU looking for it or flagging fault codes associated with it. With the software update, and a blanked off EGR (you can make a very good blanking plate from an old EGR valve base), the engine will run far better.

Incidentally, depending upon the year of Zafira and its current software version, an update of the ECU's will probably improve the driveability no end.
