Hi,

Im new to this website and not entirely sure if this has already been asked in a thread since i couldnt find it but dont know how to use the website properly yet either. I've tried looking around google aswell but couldnt find much information about how many miles the facelift c350 cdi engine usually last before they need replacing or rebuilding. Mine is a 2012 c350 cdi with 142k miles which has been very well looked after by previous owners and wondering how many more miles before i start looking at gettinf the engine rebuilt since i want to keep this car for a couple of years as it was the car i wanted to get since i first passed my driving test.

If anyone also knows any reputable places to get an engine rebuild for when I will need one, that will also be appreciated.

Thank you

How long is a piece of string? Seen engines dead at 50k either through abuse, manufacturing fault or lack of maintenance....seen them at 250k plus. If you replace all the parts as they wear then it could last forever....like Triggers broom! My little 4 pot derv has 171k miles on and runs like new.....but I look after it, never cane it from cold etc....not everyone does that. When I did the sump gasket I could still see the cross hatching on the bore! These days the rest of the car and more importantly all the electronis fall apart and fail usually well before the engine dies.

Most modern engines will never need a rebuild if looked after so relax and enjoy the very nice car. (And if it did it would be economic madness to attempt it.)

What might happen is something important goes wrong like a cam chain tensioner breaks and the chain skips a tooth, or a turbo lets go and debris gets into the engine or the gearbox wears out due to no atf services... These things are expensive and tend to right off some cars because of relative value.

Thank you everyone for your replies, the car was previously looked after very well from what i can see and im planning to keep it that way. Fingers crossed everything else lasts me for a good while until i get to take it on some road trips around the country and then in the rest of europe.

Not sure that these folk are the best to advise you on this. They're a spoiled lot.
Book a flight to Frankfurt, and stand in the queue for a taxi. Those boys can tell you what to expect.

My guess: they'll say 250-350k kms before you need any kind of rework, but they're the people who keep diesels running beyond 500k kms

This lot on here change their vehicles at the drop of a bluetooth / CarPlay. (Me included)

Iain Tyrrell, the famous classic performance specialist runs a 200k mile E320 estate.

Here's a recent chat of him talking about it, (And his Range Rover: boo hiss).

Welcome to MBClub.

Engine rebuilds are relatively rare because modern engines are designed and built to much higher standards than the were a few decades ago. Unless there’s a specific and common issue with a particular engine, then you will struggle to find enough examples of them being rebuilt to draw any conclusions.

In reality most cars meet their end when a repair can’t easily be justified by the owner due the cost being of the repair - either mechanical or accident - being such a large proportion of a vehicle’s value at that time. Car values reduce over time and so the owner of a £2000 car may decide that a £1000 repair is not worthwhile.

Similarly the same owner may decide that another £400 repair, a further £150 repair, and a £700 service (etc) are also not worthwhile and as the amount of skipped repairs and maintenance stacks up, then the more likely it is that the with be a further major issue will manifest, and the more likely to be uneconomic to “sort”.

Keep on top of repairs and maintenance and the car will run reliably for much longer than it otherwise would. It sounds like you and the previous owner that approach anyway, so keep doing what you’re doing and enjoy the car. Oh and don’t worry about it 👍🏻

Might be worth looking through the oil filler cap to see if you have a single cam chain (or a double ) , the single ones are apparently a lot less durable so you might need that doing sooner ?
