Went out today to come to work and the car is unresponsive to the key fob. ow do I get to the battery as it has a power tailgate? Is it just a case of opening the door with the metal blade and climbing through?
Thanks

Doesn't it have keyhole in the tailgate?

I don't think so - anyway you'd have to manually lfit the tailgate (how retro!) and would that do it any good?
Having said that there must be a way in, question is what

My CLS had a powered boot lid, no issue with manual operation and it had a keyhole.

Best go and check, it'll probably need lubrication before you can get the key to work..

Fair enough, I'll have a poke around tonight once I'm home. Thanks

So no there isn't a key hole on the tailgate. I an use the metal blade to access the drivers door but can I open the other doors? I need to retrieve a child seat. Also am I likely to set the alarm off and will it stop?

Sorry, are you SURE there's no keyhole? Stare at the rear numberplate and look up. if it's there, it faces downwards to the bumper. I had a 2004 E500 and that had one.

If it isn't there, from memory, you simply put the rear seats down and clamber through to the back, release a panel on the rear door and there's a manual release cable.

Or just run the battery conditioner cables through the rear passenger door.

If you can't open all three rear doors, just move the drivers seat well forward, and run an extension cable into the car and run the battery conditioner from that.

Is the battery completely flat? Or is it that there's just a problem with remote key opening?

If the battery still has some charge in it, you should be able to electrically open the rear tailgate inside the car (i.e. not using the key)

Obviously if the battery is completely flat, the alarm can't go off.

Yes, the alarm should go off but stop when you put the key in the ignition.

The other doors should open as normal from the inside. Drop the rear seats and climb through to release the tailgate from inside.

Should really have said from the out that you should check with the second key and check the fob battery is ok. When was it last changed?

Won’t chargeing OR jump starting work from the Positive & Negative points in the engine bay?

Note; above picture is from a left hand drive car so things may be opposite layout.

Open driver’s door, open the bonnet, feed power in via the +12v jump point and then cycle the central locking - easy :)

What year is the car in question? The handbook for a 2006 car shows jump starting to the rear system battery only?

I've found a pdf with the charging points for my engine so I shall try this. Thanks for everyone's input. I'll let you know

Looking at the OPs avatar it’s an E55 wagon so pre-facelift and probably earlier than 2006.

Well I'm in, no alarm. Car seems completely dead. I'll leave it on charge for a couple of hours and see if there's any difference.
