C270 CDI Turbodiesel
I have a C270 CDI and the turbo is working ok and I can travel for long distances on motorways with no problems. Once the turbo shuts down either in traffic or leaving the motorway, the turbo will not cut in again. The only way to get it working again is to turn the ignition off momentarily then back on again and then the turbo kicks in again after 2-3 seconds. Any clues please?

It needs to go on a Star diag machine specialists like myself and dealers have them. The cause could be a number if things. The most common is the MAF sensor.

Its the inlet port shut off motor!

I have had the car on a Star tester and the fault coming up is the Inlet port shut off motor. Apparently its under the inlet manifold and the problem may be the linkages but I just can't seem to find it! do I access it from the top or bottom of the engine and what does it look like? I understand that it is around 5 hours work to replace it. Incidentally, I have replaced the MAF sensor. I recently drove the car on motorways for over 100 miles and it was fine but when I drive gently in the town, the turbo works for a few miles and then stops working. I turn the ignition off then on with the car either moving or stationary and the turbo jumps back into life. Any advice is gratefully received.

Star will also allow you to operate that motor, so that you can see it working. (or not!) Brighton isn't a million miles from Horndean where Olly (PCS) resides, you could do far worse than take it to him for confirmation.

I have recently changes the inlet manifold on a similar car (C220 Cdi) due to a butterfly valve breaking lose and wedging itself in the cylinder head. You will have trouble seeing the actuation rod for these and the shut off motor that actuates them, as they are buried under the inlet manifold. Taking the manifold off to look is not an easy job.

The maifold with the inlet posrt shut off attaced to it will probably need replacing or the linkage has fallen off.

How can you tell when the turbo's not working?

Black C55, you are spot on, the linkage has fallen off! The problem is what to do now? It is possible to see the linkage and I have removed the motor with extreme difficulty and checked it is ok and the mechanism in the manifold seems to operate smoothly using using a long rod from under the car but how to actually get there and fix it is another matter altogether. Do you/anybody know why the linkage fell off and more importantly how to effect a fix? It seems pretty much impossible to get to it from under the car and going in from the top looks like a very long job. is there a trick to this?

When you start to fit the bar make sure that all the actuating levers are in place and pointed in the right direction. Might be worth taking it to Olly at PCS/

any cles as to why the linkage "fell off" is there a modified linkage? I cant believe that an important part would just "fall off" of a c270

I still don't know if its best to tackle the problem from the top or bottom of the engine!

From the bottom.

The linkage just not just fall off as such. The mechanism gets tight and starts to seize so the arm pulling it cannot cope and it pops off.

A friend of mine has fixed the mechanism over against the spring with the motor disconnected and it seems to be fine now -but I am sure that the motor wasn't there for decoration so don't know what will be the resulting complication.

Any advances on this Problem?

I need to do the SAME thing, Check these flaps, Rodds, & motor, for the inlet Port shut off motor!

Where are these parts on the car any Pics? links? or diagrams available online?

Is it on the side of the EGR? or on the side of the Airbox?

Really confused, BUT once I have more info, Would like to tackle this myself ASAP!

The parts are on the underside of the inlet manifold were it meets the cylinder head. You will need to look from under the car as they are very hard to see

That doesn't show it very well at all but it does show the parts
I will be changing my manifold soon I might do a write up with photos
