Hello Kris
I've just sold my beautiful 280CE (click here) due to extensive rust. New owner is is exporting her to Malaysia for restoration.
For the pending Mot, extensive welding was required to sills / floorpans / front suspension upper mount / boot wells / maybe subframe attachment points...
Hi there MrG
I have a 280CE as a weekend / spannering car.
Located in West London and parked on the street.
I checked :
comparative quote websites. Cheapest search rates was £400/year FC with unknown companies which escalated to £1,500 upwards upon further enquiry
existing insurer...
W123 sunroof fixed
Finally got round to checking connectivity of all the wires.
All OK from sunroof dash switch to :
motor in boot
earth
fusebox
Moving on to underside of the fuse box, there was power on the copper 12V supply bus but 0V at the screw terminal.
Problem turned out...
Once cleaned up the caliper pistons moved freely.
The pads were seized solid onto the caliper body.
Managed to liberate them symapthetically with some motorcycle tyre levers.
problem is caused by the previous owner using the car very little over the past 5 years
Checked out the rear n/s brake yesterday. Same story as the o/s.
Inbound brake pad / piston was seized.
Inside of disc was badly pitted and corroded due to inactivity (and road salt?).
Caliper dust seals were hard and disintegrating.
Extended the pistons and cleaned with brake fluid and a...
Last week, I had a squeaking noise from the rear on my 280CE.
Particulatly noticable on a dual carriageway passing vertical posts supporting Armco barriers.
Thought it was a blowing exhaust but turned out to be a binding O/S brakes - discovered after touching the wheel which was very hot...
I got the same problem on my 1980 280CE.
Fuse in fusebox seems OK but no power to it nor the switch on console.
Sunroof is not stuck because I can open it from the boot either by :
manually cranking the nut; or
connecting a battery directly to the motor wires
Is there an additional relay or...
Was very useful here too.
My 1980 280 CE idles a little rough for a 6 cylinder.
Any brand recommendations for :
distributor cap
rotor arm
HT leads & caps
spark plugs
It's about £300 for the above at my local Merc dealer.
I didn't get a price on the coil.
Cheers

Several years ago on the Westway (A40) a 40mph three lane out of London I...
Thanks for the welcomes.
Looking forward to a bit of detailing and fettling this weekend now the weather appears to be warming up.
Need to contemplate the following :

fix sunroof - no power to switch
clean and feed...
Hello Roryl
Congratulations on your recent purchase.
I just posted today regarding my 280CE too!
As your 280 is in good condition, main concern would be wincing at the fuel guage as it heads to zero.
