I am sure it would greatly assist everyone reading this if you could provide a few more details such as model, age, mileage, how long you have had it, did this problem appear suddenly or has it been getting worse over a period of time.

The item you have circled is the engine oil separator. No idea why it should be noisy, mine isn't, there don't appear to be any valves or other moving parts. Possibly one of the pipes has a slight blockage, I would start by cleaning everything out.

Place 2 strips of masking tape on the bootlid above and below the badges before you remove the badges. Use them as a guide when you refit. The tape will also help prevent damage to the bootlid when you prise the badges off.
Have you checked the transmission fluid level ?
When was it last changed and was the filter changed at the same time ?

Apologies, driving home tonight I noticed that the knob on the switch does light up when the ignition is on. Definitely no illumination on the surrounding symbols.

Just a quick update. Took the car to DDR in Ashtead today for a B-service and to investigate the noise. Turns out it was nothing more than excessive road noise from the cheapo tyres fitted by a previous owner. Very knowledgeable and helpful guys, will definitely be using them again.

I did run it up on the ramps and have a quick look underneath for any obvious oil leaks or CV boot damage. The rain set in before I had a chance to jack it up and waggle the wheels.
