recoded

Hi all I have just bought a new style chrome key off ebay and have just been informed by mercedes that they cannot be recoded to my vehicle. Only ML and Vito vans can, and that they are coded by Mercedes for life when ordered or manufactured. Is this correct or are they being obstinate? I...
