My E350cdi saloon has a rather snazzy 19" staggered set up, the ride is ok but wondered if you could fit 16" alloys?...I have read that they will not fit due to the brake size on the 350cdi?

AlloywheelsDirect have quite an extensive list of 16" alloys suitable for the W212 E Class.

But as you allude to, there may be a problem with fitment if you have the bigger sport calipers.
Maybe a call to AWD might shed some light on fitment?

17 inches will defenitely fit even with the largest stock brakes... ( had them on my old S212 with 4 pot calipers and 344mm discs) 16 inch wheels might be a bit of a push, if you have 4 pot calipers.. will most likely fit on 322mm disc and floating calipers

I used to use 16” wheels for my winter setup on my 2011 E350CDI Avantgarde without issue. According to the wheel & tyre combinations section of the manual, they are also a valid fitment for the Sport model. You will be quite restricted on maximum wheel / tyre width with 16's though (225/55 on an 8J rim).

I would stick with 17s. I have 17” winters on now. I’m sure I read that 16” won’t work.

I don’t notice a big difference in ride from dropping down from 18”

<sigh>

While I wouldn't recommend 16's for general use, they do fit and allow a taller tyre profile which works well as a winter fitment as the tyres are narrower too.

I agree that the best compromise for ride quality is a square (i.e. not staggered) 17-inch setup.

Just pulled the trigger on These just need to find one more now!...am going to miss the look of these staggered 19" wheels and the ride quality really isn't that bad! But driving through the New Forrest last week at night in the rain.... I can't believe my luck that they haven't buckled with the amount of pot holes we hit!

Well here they are!...fitted no issues...obviously going from 19" to 16" the ride is more compliant. Not to everyone's tastes am sure! but lends to the Tutonic utilitarian nature of the car and a square set of 16's is always going to be cheaper to look after than staggered 19's.

Anyone looking for a beautiful set of 19" alloys with Continental SportContact tyres?!...will create an advert in the for sale section.

@as400, I am interested in your wheels for sale but as a Newbie, I lack the post count to reply to the classified ad.
If you see this please send me a message. Thanks, I didn't want to post a load of tripe to simply get past the barrier...

Are those wheel bolts of the correct type , they don't seem to go in far enough ?? I can see a gap of may be 2mm .

Sorry, late to the party here, bit when I had my 17" winters and 18" summers both in for refurbishment, the alloy wheel shop lent me a set of square (non-staggered) w211 W class 16s for my w212. The offset was slightly wrong, but not meaningfully so. I only did a few miles on them, but they did just clear the calipers.

This type:

it does look like some of the bolts are also at different depths. Look at the back wheel as well. Is there a bolt sticking out? Have some come undone 😨

I had spacers fitted so ordered longer bolts, am guessing the garage that fitted these left the spacers in place when they swapped the wheels over and are still using the necessary longer bolts provided. Well done for spotting this, I hadn't noticed.

I have just been out to check, very bizarre! yes in the picture the bolts look quite uneven but in reality are all well seated and nothing has worked loose! I think its just an optical illusion from my phone camera. Phew!

Would it not make sense to keep them for future sale value.

🤷🏻‍♂️
That's what I'd be doing , the £600 would never buy another set. I'm keeping mine that's for sure.
