I am going to look at a 1996 c250 td next week and would appreciate any advice on obvious faults to look out for. It is a two owner low mileage (only 82,000) with the last owner having owned it for eight years. He is looking for £1200 which reflects low mileage etc. I am looking for a car that I can play with in the garage and hope that this is a good candidate. Any help will be greatly appreciated

You must see it start from cold, as in not run for at least overnight.

If it starts OK, drives without undue noises or odd feelings, has no rust, buy it.

rear wheel arch rust - ignore fronts as they are bolt on replacements but might be a good bargaining point. Bottom lip of boot if its an estate. check lock in boot operates from key (prob wont)

check for wobbly mirror glass
check inner section of door handles are tight
aircon works - prob wont, needs regas.....
no whining on power steering
usual fluids etc
front wheel arch liners will prob be missing
run car - check for bubbles in the diesel lines just behind the fuel filter
srs light comes on and goes off... (mine had no bulb!)
