1999 Indian W124 E220

Parking sensors on a 1999 W124 seems unlikely (although, yes, I can see sensors on the rear bumper). Can you buy these after-market?

These are most certainly aftermarket. I've seen them fitted in the same OEM-look way to 190Es as well.

Probably better capable of surviving poor roads.

I recall it didn't sell well, because the Indians with the money to afford it were unhappy with getting such an old model rather than the W210. The irony....

Build quality is very good on those, I had one myself. By the time India started making those, the newer W210 was already out. Still a lot of Indians bought them and there still is a lot of them being used today especially in Mumbai. I can very much guarantee that a lot of them will have very low miles on them, as indians dont really tend to venture out too far by car (or fear someone will crash into it).

my understanding is that the cars were built up from kits sent from Germany.

Yes, I think your correct - I am sure that CKD on the data card indicates that (I may be wrong though !). I wonder how thorough the rust proofing was ? It's a shame it hasn't got cruise or it would be ideal for me as an everyday car.

Did they ever make any of these in automatic in India?

They always seem to be manuals.

I've got an Indian W124 and there's nothing wrong with it. The only thing which is a bit annoying is its height, compared to German-made W124s.

You could fit another wheel in that arch gap.

Mine was sitting pretty high too, but it was a really smooth ride! Then again, I never had to worry about the wheels rubbing when I had it packed with luggage and 3 people sitting in the rear, even with the EVO II alloys on it.

There's a V plate blue one rides around near me. Funny, if I recall correctly that rides a bit high too.

They're all a bit higher than German ones...Probably due to dodgy roads in India? Although, all of them are well-specced. They almost always have A/C and sometimes even full proper leather, not Tex crap.

And yeah, so far I've only seen manual gearboxes. Don't think there are any Auto Indian W124s.

The high springs sound ideal for our roads never mind indian ones tbh :)

I see it has a "Thatcher" alarm, if you try to steal it it clouts you with a handbag.
I had a new E220 on an "S" plate and it was well made. It rode high and also had a massive steel underplate to protect against poor Indian roads. We could do with that bringing back here now. The speedo had to be changed but other than that it was fine. All the parts were labeled "made in Germany". Built like a tank!
